"Show and Tell” activities allow the children to personalize English.
This makes using English fun and natural, and engages children of all ages and levels.
This is my favorite show and tell activity. It is quick and easy and can be used at any
time during the school year.
Before class, prepare a worksheet with two sentences.
Write them above two large shapes.
For this demonstration I’ll use: “This is my best friend” and ‘This is my favourite
toy.”
First, get the children to write their name at the top of the sheet.
Then, ask them to draw a picture of their best friend and their favourite toy in the
appropriate shape.
Next, collect all the papers and sit in a circle as a class.
Pick up the first piece of paper and ask the child who drew it to come to the front.
They then tell the other children what they’ve drawn.
For example, “This is my best friend Kevin. He is tall!”
Encourage the children to ask questions about the picture by demonstrating yourself.
You and the class might ask, “Why is he your best friend? Is your favorite toy blue?
Is blue your favorite color?” and so on.
Then continue with the other children, encouraging discussion as you go.
The first time you do this activity, the children probably won’t speak much.
But by the end of this lesson, and certainly by the end of the year, you will see a huge
improvement!
The children will begin to be comfortable with the activity and will begin to communicate
naturally in English.
