hi I'm Jason.
And I'm Jenny. Jason, we have been getting a lot of phone calls recently
for water damages involving water heaters. Really? Yeah.
and I am gonna read to you what came from Plano
who wrote us in yesterday: "my water heater recently went out
while I was on vacation. You guys were knowledgeable and courteous.
Thanks for all your help." Yeah it really is this time of year we hear a lot about
water damage from hot water tanks and other lines bursting because people are
on vacation or out of town, they come back and they've got this horrible nightmare. Yeah.
But it really comes down to the water and the chemistry inside the water. in some water
All water is different. Some people have wells, some have city water, some people have
water softeners, other people don't
inside the water, there's ions and there's chemistry that actually can affect
the hot water tank itself and eat away the lining on the inside of the tank.
A lot of manufacturers put in what's called a sacrificial annode
and I know that I sounds really scientific, but it's really not. It's just a big, long magnesium-coated
rod and the idea is that the ions and the chemistry of the water will attack that
anode and it will save the lining of the tank. And it does work, it's pretty effective.
But over time, that anode will completely erode away.
and then water has no choice but to then start eating away
at the lining of the tank. Over time, that can cause mineral
deposit buildup, it can rust the bottom of the tank, it can even eat away all the way
through cause a bad leak.
So you need to inspect your water tank periodically. I know they're not the best
thing to look at
that's why we put them in a closet. Out of sight, out of mind,
But you cannot neglect your hot water tank especially if your home is between eight,
fifteen years old
It needs to be inspected. Look through the line, make sure you don't see any leaks,
and then you also need periodically check that pressure valve.
If you don't feel comfortable doing it, you should have a licensed plumber come and do it, so
I don't know if you check yours or not but No, mine's on the attic. I won't go up there!
Yeah, well you're going up there
occasionally to pick clothes, store things, get Christmas decorations
down, things like that. Just give it a glance and if it's been a really long
time, have a licensed plumber. It could save you a lot of money and heartache over
time
yeah with the calls that we've been getting lately, it really is worth having
it checked out, the supply lines, making sure there's no water coming from
underneath the closet
and definitely turning the water off before going out of town.
We've recommended it in previous shows. Toilets and everything else is all
connected.
We do appreciate your email to us today and always remember, if you
have any questions, concerns, just email them to us and we'd be happy to help.
