Marketing is everywhere in every shape and form.
Take a walk down the Magnificent Mile in Chicago,
you'll notice that marketing is everywhere.
Take a walk even in Charletson here and you'll notice that
there are many retail stores.
Here in the School of Business, we provide a wide range
of exciting courses in marketing from the basic foundation of
principle marketing to promotion which is all about advertising.
Social media marketing to sales, the consumer behavior, retail,
international marketing.
It is a whole wide world.
I encourage participative learning and my classes are very
much open in terms of interaction and discussion.
I encourage students to critically think about topics
that are related to marketing and to make their thinking
a part of our discussion in classes.
So I have that open environment that facilitates
participative learning.
I use a lot of examples, a lot of YouTube clips, and ads,
particularly from real companies so that students can better
connect the concepts with marketing practices.
I have had students say, oh I never really thought about it
in that way.
I observe that a retailer, for example, will use lighting
in a particular way or particular colors or their
stores are layed out in a particular fashion.
But now I understand why and I think that that is so valuable
because from the consumer side, they understand themselves a bit
more and then they understand we are trying to teach them
in terms of enhancing retail strategy
or promotional strategies.
They have fun doing their assignments.
For example, in one of their assignments this past week
was a Super Bowl assignment.
And they looked at ads from this year's Super Bowl
and Super Bowls of the past years they selected one and
disected it and looked at its components and basically
evaluated it critically to see how it actually
could be improved.
So, I think that students see the practical value of what they
are teaching them in class and that excites them.
I would say, if you have a passion for marketing, anything
that is marketing related, perhaps you want to understand
about consumers, perhaps you want to understand how retail
stores operate, perhaps you want to understand how to better
connect with consumers using Facebook or social media
in general.
Then perhaps you want to explore marketing.
It might just be the field for you.
