Welcome to the New Student Tutorial: Coming to the U.S. for new International students
at New York University. This playlist covers the steps needed for getting your student
(F-1) or exchange visitor (J-1) visa, entering the U.S., and reporting to NYU. Please note:
If you are transferring to NYU from another school within the U.S., the process will be
different from that in these videos.
View the link listed for Instructions for transferring to NYU.
In order to begin the process you must first get accepted to a full-time academic program
at NYU that qualifies for issuance of an I-20 or DS-2019. You must receive official notification
of admission in the form of either an original admission letter or electronic notification
(email). If you are not yet admitted to NYU and have questions about how to apply, please
visit the link shown (link to NYU Admissions).
After receiving your official acceptance, you will need to determine which student status
you would like to apply for. Most students will come to NYU as F-1 students. J-1 status
is for students participating in NYU exchange programs, students sponsored by their home
government or university, and students already in the United States in J-1 status. Once you
know your desired status we can begin.
What is an I-20/DS-2019?
The I-20 and DS-2019 are very important documents issued for F-1 or J-1 students. The document
will be necessary in order to apply for the U.S. visa stamp and is used for initial entry
into the U.S. The I-20/DS-2019 (Application) is also used to ensure that you have sufficient
funds to cover your educational and living expenses during your stay in the U.S.
To start the process of coming to the U.S., you must first submit your I-20 or DS-2019
application depending on the status you would like to apply for. Please note that most School
of Continuing and Professional Studies or SCPS non-degree programs do not qualify for
the issuance of an I-20 or DS-2019 from the OGS at this time. Submit your I-20/DS-2019
application as soon as you have your NYU Net ID and password (included) in your acceptance
notification from your school. Now that you have this information, you will be able to
login and complete the form.
How do I fill out the I-20/DS-2019 Application?
Download a copy of the 1-20/DS-2019 Application from the OGS Web site here. This web link
will guide you through the process before you complete the application.
Remember, when filling out the 1-20/DS-2019 Application, enter all amounts in U.S. dollars
and attach supporting documents, such as bank statements, a letter of support, loan approval
notices, and award letters if you are receiving an assistantship or scholarship.
The required amounts are listed on the Estimated Expenses webpage by school and degree program.
To visit the Estimated Expenses page, please visit the shown link.
If you plan to bring a spouse and/or children with you, then you must show additional funds.
For more information visit the shown link.
When do I need to submit my I-20/DS-2019 Application?
The OGS strongly recommends that you file your application at least three months prior
to your intended start date in case of visa delays or security checks for administrative
processing. However, we do not have a formal deadline. If you wait too long to file, you
may not arrive in time for the start of the semester.
After reviewing your 1-20/DS-2019 Application and determining that you have sufficient funds
to enroll at NYU, the OGS will issue your I-20 or DS-2019 and mail it to you. Visit
the shown link for current processing times.
It is very important that you retain your initial I-20 or DS-2019 and all subsequent
copies issued throughout your stay in the U.S. Now that you have your I-20 or DS-2019,
watch the next video to learn how to pay your SEVIS fee, which is required to apply for
your visa.
