Hi, I'm Kevin Hall, the Vice-President of Research at the University of Guelph.
This video is part of a series of videos providing budgetary information to the faculty and staff of the University,
and will focus on our unique agreement between the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs and the University.
This is a good news story for the University.
The agreement is really a social contract between the public of Ontario, the Ministry, and the University.
This agreement allows our researchers to study issues significant to society such as food safety, the health of the environment,
and community needs within this province. In 2008 and 2009 this agreement provided over 76 million dollars to the University.
This allowed us to fund 50 positions across the University structure. And additional funding for 40 graduate students across campus.
In addition we operate 14 field research stations and 3 regional campuses.
This agreement is really for all of us at the University.
Over $12 million in funding is provided in an open competition for research available to all members, across all colleges on campus.
In addition, $12 million is generated through revenue from laboratories run under the agreement.
An economic study undertaken in 2008 identified that $3 is returned to the province for every dollar spent on this agreement in indirect and direct impacts.
If you look at the economic spin-offs, the total funding of over $1.2 billion is received by people in the province.
I would encourage you to learn more about the agreement by looking at our website at the Office of Research Services.
At this time I'd like to take the opportunity to thank our partners at OMAFRA
for the amazing opportunity they've provided for us at the University.
