We report from the village of Skebokvarn, Sweden
A group from Stockholm are setting up a new type of eco-village
The first of its kind in the county
This is for growing vegetables.
It creates a wind-break
It is formed like a horse-shoe to create a better growing climate
Will you be using cow dung to build with?
Some of the buildings will have walls of clay
We have a lot of good clay here
We mix the cow dung into the clay
It reacts and makes the clay more water-proof
With a combination of new and old technology they intend to meet the future
A future without fossil fuels
We see it as a good investment
As fuel prices increase, so will food prices
Not for us. We secure our food supply for the future
In an eco-village, food is produced close by.
It is organic, chemical free
The whole farm is about 22 hectares
!2 people work during the weekends
But they expect the village to support 30 adults in the future
The most difficult bit is organisation, working as a group, coming to agreement.
including decision making. It is not easy.
How have people in the village taken to you?
They thought it was great that new people came to the village
The village is shrinking, people are moving out.
Don' they think you all are a bit mad?
Some of them, yes, for sure!
