When I decided to attend college, MCC was the best and most logical choice in my mind.
I didn’t know what I wanted to focus my studies on; I just knew I wanted to further
my education. My plan was to take general classes and hope that somewhere along the
way I’d figure out what I wanted to do. The light bulb came on when I took Introduction
to Sociology After the first class, I knew that this was what I wanted to major in. It
opened up my world to ideas and concepts that I had never studied before. Sociology made
me critically think about social issues affecting our society such as racism, poverty, discrimination,
inequality, and gender. All of these things that I had experienced as a minority student
were validated as real because I was reading about these abstract ideas in textbooks, and
that truly solidified my interest in Sociology. Majoring in Sociology has prepared me for
the diverse and fluid world we live in, as well as given me a solid foundation to work
in various fields. Currently I work for Senior Services Associates as a Care Coordinator;
it’s a non-profit organization here in McHenry County that works to better the lives of seniors,
and I am working towards my master’s in Social Work at Aurora University. I am extremely
proud to have attended MCC and to have found my passion for Sociology here.
