Educational researcher John Goodlad states that for many students
academic learning is too abstract and that students need to see
touch and smell what they read and write about.
Hi, I'm Carole Spelic, I represent PACCE, the Pioneer
Academic Center for Community Engagement. We're a center that builds capacity
for service and experiential learning here at UW-Platteville.
UW-Platteville's mission includes promoting high impact practices that
provide deep learning experiences for students
PACCE offers UW-Platteville students and faculty
the opportunity to experience grow and make a difference by working on
real community projects, in real situations,
with real consequences. Behind every PACCE experience is a great story
like this one.
High schoolers both men and women can expect a very interactive process with
the opera workshop.
We work directly with the students whether it's them coming
to the University or us going out into their schools
and we teach them opera terms, we teach them correct
ways to sing, we teach them all about the opera and the creative process
that goes on behind making an opera.
It enhances our overall learning experience because we
get to have a hands-on experience with our community members,
whether that be teachers
or students alike we get to go out into the community and help them and give back to them
while
at same time we are learning as well.
All my previous experience in high school and such had been in musical theater where as opera
is a different aspect.
So I was just excited to learn about this
new style of music and performing. It really expanded the experience of not
only
did we focus on the single performance aspects of each student
but we're able to do additional outreach.
PACCE allowed us to go into that classroom situation and work with
high school students.
It's really nice for us to be able to get out into the community into
classrooms kinda for two main reasons.
First so that we get experience because
when you're sitting in your classrooms all day you're not getting the straight
teaching experience. Then also allows for
connections and collaboration with area teachers of eventually, I may be teaching in
this area
so I'm starting to get to know them realizing how they run their programs
and getting
different experiences where I only went to one high school, so I only saw how one
high school choral teacher
worked, but when I go out to these other schools I get to see how they
run their programs, what works better, what works not as well
and so it's really interested in that aspect as well.
Students should be involved with PACCE because it gives them an opportunity to go out and explore
their major whether you're involved in music,
engineering technology. It allows you to go out
and to put what you've learned into
reality and ultimately that's what we're going to school for,
is to go out and work with community members. I think it's important for
anybody to learn hands-on because
it really helps you get a better understanding
whether you understand the material of what you're learning in the classrooms and
allows you to get your hands dirty,
allows you more importantly to make mistakes
and learn from those mistakes and gain knowledge of what to do in the future.
Through PACCE these students were able to experience their education in tandem with
the community partner,
to grow their skills and make a difference through the empowered
capacity to pursue solutions. But the impact of a PACCE project does not stop
with the students.
Faculty involved in a PACCE project experience,
grow and make a difference too.
Being a part of PACCE has totally changed my perspective
as far as outreach is concerned. My training
was in opera and also I was a part of a professional
opera touring company for young people. Of all, that was one of my favorite
memories of my past. So in creating opera workshop,
I wanted to give the students an opportunity to experience opera
and in the demands and the wonderful
world of opera which is very different than
the other musical experiences that they're having here.
PACCE...When I discovered PACCE
they allowed me from my other passion which is to reach out to other
ages and again primarily we have
many music educators and so I was trying to find a way how do I
go out of the box. How do I find opportunities for my students that are
prior to their student teaching. Give them different opportunities
outside of the classroom, that they can expand their
experience and try new things, and engage students of all different
ages, and maybe an area of opera that they may not be exposed to.
Through support from PACCE UW-Platteville
engage students in high-impact practices, there by growing their capacity to be
effective teachers and researchers.
At the same time they're making a difference through service to their
community.
There is yet another group that benefits from PACCE.
Our community partners also experience,
grow and make a difference.
We are so lucky to have UW-Platteville and have
so many connections that we can make between our students and
in real life, and training, pre
people pre-employed whether it be pre-service teachers
pre-service engineers, we're so fortunate to have that opportunity in town here,
and I can't tell you the number of times that we've been able to tap into those
resources.
Having university students come and work with our students
gives some insight into what is the college experience like,
what types of careers are out there, for high school students. We wouldn't have
that exposure if we didn't have UW-Platteville in town.
And we're just really lucky to have that.
By partnering with PACCE, community entities experience a positive and reciprocal relationship with
UW-Platteville,
grow their organization's ability to address challenges and opportunities
and make a difference by being a partner in preparing students to be citizens of
tomorrow.
Taking part in a PACCE project is a win-win for everyone involved.
