The successful Kansas cabins program is now in its 17th year, with 75 cabins statewide
and more being planned. Many changes have occurred, and the next innovative idea comes
from Lovewell State Park.
Lovewell Park Manager Rick Cleveland recently purchased four government-surplus FEMA trailers
to be modified for use as cabins this year. Along with Lovewell’s current six traditional
wood cabins, these new beautiful and modern living spaces will provide most of the comforts
of home at significant construction savings.
“We purchased these, as you can see this one here, it’s kind of like the rest of
them, they’re all pretty fancy. Two of the cabins are actually going to have electronic
fireplaces in them, they’re all going to have heat and air conditioning in them, and
they’re going to be pretty nice.”
Placement awaits completion of site work and sewer and utility lines, which were delayed
by this hard winter.
“This is one of the locations where we’re going to put our cabins. We’re putting all
four of them in this area. It’s above the Southwinds Day Use area at Lovewell State
Park right now. The day use area contains our swimming beach at Lovewell, our shower
and toilet building off to the right, and folks are going to have a great view from
here out over the water for these cabins. We’re really looking forward to getting
them put in.”
The FEMA “cabins” will be set at ground level, integral with wooden decks – fine
quarters for enjoying the beauty and recreation of Lovewell State Park. Each will sleep four.
This cost-saving idea is yet another way that Kansas Wildlife and Parks makes better outdoors
opportunities for you.
