what is in the cuts let's look at that national priorities project that the
other good graphic looking at what we've got these eighty five billion dollars in
automatic across the board federal spending cuts in twenty thirteen fiscal
year
and they're focused mostly on discretionary spending and uh... let's
see what what what's the best way to put the graphic government i don't know if
we can put up by a full screen yeah okay so
and uh... and pee pee wee outline this brilliantly
there's uh... a-six areas here community-development block grants
emergency food and shelter programs head start
low-income home energy assistance program title one which grants witcher
grants to school districts to improve teaching and learning
particularly in low-income schools that we don't need that doing
and uh... the wick program special supplemental nutrition program for women
infants and children
if you look at the third column in this graphic and i'll tell you what it is for
people who are watching
that shows the percentage change in these categories
from fiscal year twenty ten to twenty thirteen
and these range anywhere from the only one that sign increase was headstart a
paltry five percent increase their
all the others saw significant decreases up to and including fifty three almost
fifty three percent
for the emergency food and shelter program these are social programs
education programs important stuff the last column here shows
the cuts that would result
in addition
to what mostly have been pretty extensive cuts already to these programs
as a result of the sequester
community-development block grants would lose our hundred and sixty million
additional dollars after losing thirty five percent over the last for fiscal
years
emergency food and shelter programs of those five million
headstart would lose four hundred and ten million dollars the low-income home
energy assistance program which is
subsidizing status for energy costs for low-income households just for people to
stay warm in the winter
hundred and fifty-four million dollars cut there
and incredibly
title one which of these grants to school districts to improve teaching
seven hundred and forty million dollars would be cut so we'll we look at this
and then from republicans what complaints do we hear we hear that the
cuts do too much
to defense spending defense spending which has already been widely addressed
by pentagon in military officials as saying they're spending built in their
that we're doing and we plan to do that nobody's even asked for
that we don't even need
and we still are adding in all of these increases
those cuts republicans very very concerned about
but look at what's happening to the social programs feliz
and when you compare this to
uh... military spending right
uh... one
one jet
one of the the highest and
of any
military
aircraft urvi according to the entire cut in some of these examples it's
tripoli entire cut
it's it's incredible
let me go to the time to start
what do you think is the most likely outcome here is it just going to be it
goes a calm on third to and then this is some kind of compromise cuts that nobody
is particularly thrilled with or angry with the steps is kind of
that the the emo in congress at this point
yeah i mean the only alternative is to just let him go into effect you have
um... all of the cuts that are gonna come into play
and just suffer through it
if the if they don't fix it within the first couple months after it goes into
effect its
i don't know whether it's really a realistic to expect them to do something
in a year when almost everything has already happened yeah i i i mean i don't
know
what the affect will be
on the economy specifically of just dealing with the cuts there's a range of
opinions none of them say it'll be particularly good
i'll so wonder
polling indicating that br
right now
americans would mostly think if these cuts happening appears there well that
is mostly the fault of republicans
i wonder how is that
if at all will play into the decisions politicians make about how to resolve
this going forward and how it changed the polling in the perception
the question
i think if there is of course if there is any type of
at economic
are now
boost from this
you can count on every single republican claiming that it's because of the right
i'd i don't think it's going to happen that you absolutely right that they
would try to a limit
