If you have noticed the new 2012 smartphones from Sony,
the Sony Xperia P or S, you surely didn’t miss the word about Xperia SmartTags.
SmartTags are relatively common NFC chips
which allow you to quickly switch preset profiles.
For example for the office, home, etc.
Let’s quickly show, how it all works …
You just put the phone near the tag.
This one is blue – for the car.
As you can see, a lot of preset actions are now starting.
But let’s go on to the real subject of this video:
How to make Xperia SmartTags from generic NFC tags which you can buy relatively cheaply.
What will we need?
Android smarphone with NFC capability.
Then any applicacation which allows you to read and write on NFC tags.
We will use for example TagWriter.
The easiest way to start:
If you happen to already have some SmartTag you can easily read it first.
As you can see, the only thing stored on it is this short URI address.
You need to just tap on it and choose Backup.
That will save the URI the phone’s memory.
And now you need to just pick your generic NFC tag.
Choose Create.
As you can see, we got here the previously read URI from the original SmartTag.
Hold your finger on the URI and choose Edit.
Here you see the address.
We loaded the blue one, which is first of the Xperia SmartTags set.
If we want to make a SmartTag number 2.
we just change the last number to “2”.
Save
Now we choose it
and now we just write in on our tag.
All done
And now we can check that everything works as expected.
Put the phone on the tag
and as you can see, the phone acts as if it was the original red SmartTag
So the Home profile just started.
But if you don’t have any original Xperia SmartTag.
You can of course create your own from scratch.
Just hit Create > New > URI
and just type the address in by hand.
(You can find the URI below this video)
As you can see I just typed the number 3
which should match the third black SmarTag.
We save and try if it is going to work…
Again, as you can see the Bedroom profile just started.
Analogically you can use the same procedure for the 4th tag.
That would correspond to this white tag
which by default you can use for Office.
So that was the quick walk trough of how the make own Xperia SmartTags.
Of course this video is not indented as instructions to not to buy the original Xperia SmartTags!
Personally I think the original SmartTags looks very nice and the color differentiation is very useful too.
You just don’t have to think which is which.
Anyway, if - for any reason, you cannot get the original tags from Sony
this was a quick walk trough wow to use your own NFC tags.
