In an attempt to track down *** suspects...
The Seattle Police Department’s new campaign could shock commuters as they drive to work
or take the bus. Here’s CNN with the details.
“‘Who Killed Me?’ billboards and bus ads are going
up all around the city as an effort to find suspects in at least 60 unsolved homicides
in Seattle since 2000. Eight of them this year alone.”
The ads feature the victims
picture and their name under the question “Who Killed Me?”
The first wave of billboards
feature four victims, and if and when those cases are solved new billboards will be unveiled.
KIRO
says the goal of the ads is to motivate people to come forward with details. Activists and
families suffering from the loss of their loved ones say it might help crack open a
number of cases.
“If you know something and you get on the bus and you see something
you know I believe that there's a divine spirit in people, and I believe if given a chance
people want to do what's right.”
“Looking at those faces and looking at Desmond looking
so sad, looking at his face, how can you not want to do something.”
According to
the Seattle Times, Seattle Police haven’t done a great job of keeping the victims names
in the media after the initial news stories have tapered off. But the campaign is an effort
to find the concrete evidence to put these suspects behind bars.
“Even when detectives
have a good idea of who committed a killing and can place a suspect at a crime scene,
they won't make an arrest until they have the evidence nailed down. That's because the
stakes are so high: Any missteps or cracks in a case can mean the difference between
a conviction and a killer walking free.”
The Seattle Times Clear Channel Outdoor contributed
$60,000 worth of free billboard space for the campaign.
