-...the entirety of life in the Western world. -...evolution (growing up) would have been impossible.

the same day when the Allied army 'entered' and 'liberated' (the women of) this unfortunate city.
Liberty is costly (dear).
But, one does not acquire (buy) her with gold, and not even with blood,
but with cowardice, prostitution and betrayal (treachery).
The North Americans have been able to pretend to liberate the people
and force them, at the same time, to feel utterly defeated.
