FROM THE MUSICIANS, AND THEY
WERE NOT FAZED BY ANYTHING.
I WANT TO SAY I LOVE HOW THOSE
EIGHTH NOTES ARE COMING IN.
IT'S REALLY LOVELY. MY NAME IS
RYAN HOMSEY AND I'M HERE
REHEARSING WITH MEMBERS OF THE
DSO MUSIC FOR YOUTH STRING
QUARTET, AND THIS IS THE FIRST
PIECE OF CONCERT MUSIC FOR ME
THAT INTEGRATES A LIVE
ELECTRONIC COMPONENT, AND IT'S
PLAYING ON DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF
DELAY.
THAT SOUNDS GREAT. SO, LET'S
JUST TAKE IT FROM THE TOP AND
MAYBE WE'LL JUST START AND STOP.
ROBERT GARDNER, THE ARTISTIC
DIRECTOR OF THE BALLET, AND I
WERE AWARDED A GRANT THROUGH THE
AMERICAN COMPOSERS FORUM AND NEW
MUSIC USA, WHICH ALLOWS THE
BALLET TO COMMISSION A NEW WORK
FROM ME AND BE PERFORMED BY
LIVE MUSICIANS.

EACH OTHER AND WE JUST WENT,

TO DANCE AND MOVEMENT PHRASES.
IS MY MUSICAL PHRASE, COULD I
IMAGINE FINISHING A MOVEMENT
PHRASE TO MATCH THAT?
MY DANCE TRAINING STARTED HERE
AND I HAD A 7-YEAR PROFESSIONAL
CAREER IN DANCE BEFORE I SHIFTED
TO STUDYING MUSIC COMPOSITION
FORMALLY.
>> I'M EXTREMELY EXCITED AND
VERY NERVOUS, AND I CAN'T WAIT
TO GET THOSE DANCERS
IN THE STUDIO.

I'VE NAMED THIS MOVEMENT
"LITANY," BECAUSE IT'S A
REPETITIVE SERIES OF ACTIONS
THAT REPRESENT HOW YOU GO
THROUGH YOUR DAILY LIFE WITH
MOMENTS OF INSPIRATION AND
BREAKOUT, YOU KNOW, THOSE
MOMENTS THAT--THOSE UNEXPECTED
MOMENTS THAT COME OUT OF IT.
AND GO. YUM-PUM-PUM-PUM,
PUM-PUM-PUM-PUM...
WHAT'S BEEN WONDERFUL ABOUT THE
EXPERIENCE IS IT'S BECOME
A JOINT EFFORT. WE'RE WORKING
AS AN ENSEMBLE, MYSELF
AND THE DANCERS.
THAT'S IT. NOW, KEEP MOVING

ELECTRONICS AND THE REVERB.
YOU KNOW, THE SOUNDS ARE

5...THEY'RE VERY EXCELLENT AT
LISTENING, HEARING WHAT I'M
COUNTING, AND CONNECTING THAT
WITH WHAT'S HAPPENING
IN THE SCORE.
>> IT'S KIND OF OPEN TO
INTERPRETATION, SO, I THINK THAT
IT'S--IT'S GONNA BE WHATEVER
YOU PUT ON TOP OF IT.
>> I FEEL LIKE THIS PIECE DOES A
GOOD JOB OF KIND OF WALKING THAT
LINE AND CREATING A SPACE FOR
ONE TO FEEL SOMETHING IN THEIR
