Without a doubt one of the first associations with The Swapper is
"The Prestige" by Christopher Nolan
a movie that deals with the idea of creating copies of yourself in a memorable twist
and shows what you could do with those.
Just like the idea creates an eery feeling in the movie
it is a bizarre experience to climb over a mountain of your own corpses
to accomplish an objective in the game
At a first glance it is not entirely obvious what to expect from The Swapper
To sum it up it ranks as puzzle game.
The objective is to clear puzzle rooms one by one
the rules are explained very quickly
With the press of a button you can create a clone
and also shoot a projectile to transfer your soul
into one of the bodies
Two kinds of lights can block either ability and that
is about everything you need to know
At the end of the room you want to collect an orb
which is used to unlock new areas
on the Metroidvania-like map
The good thing about this system
is the fact that you can skip rooms occasionally
if the solution seems too far out of reach
And so there is rarely a moment where you can actually get stuck in the classic sense
and the experience remains rather relaxed
The atmospheric environments were designed with clay and digitized
together with advanced graphical effects they create a very unique style
On one side high tech, on the other *** fleamarket looks
a fascinating visual style is created
Further the high concept scifi story is is accompanied by
rich sound design
which creates a sinister atmosphere not unlike
classical Scifi movies like 2001
The Swapper is a puzzle game, which motivates the player with well designed puzzles throughout
Unfortunately the game is not quite as sophisticated
as the Metroidvania setting might imply
If you are prepared that the game is about puzzles and nothing else however
you will be entertained very well
