Learning new vocabulary, words and phrases, and forgetting them, is a fundamental and often frustrating part of language learning. Let’s look at how LingQ can help you.
It is completely normal to forget words as soon as you learn them.
The yellow highlighted LingQs, or saved words and phrases in the lesson texts, not only remind you that you have met these words before, but allow you to quickly check their meaning when you see them in different contexts.
You will be amazed how effective this is in accumulating vocabulary.
It is often a good idea to review your LingQs before and after you study a lesson. Click the yellow LingQs button in the Dashboard to view all your LingQs for this lesson.
You can choose from a number of tools to review them: Flash Cards, Dictation, Multiple Choice and Cloze Tests.
If you want to edit your LingQs, this is quickly done in the Vocabulary section. You can print your LingQs and review them on paper. You can also export your LingQs to third party flashcard tools like Anki.
It is often a good idea to spend some time with each new saved term. Click on a yellow word to see more information about it or to edit it.
Notice that you can look at examples of the word in use in other lessons and even click through to open up the lesson with that word selected.
You may find that even with a Hint or dictionary meaning available to you, you still need additional help to understand a phrase.
Just post on the Ask Your Tutor forum and your question will quickly be answered by another member. Previously asked questions are also shown here.
You can add notes for each LingQ and even add an audio file for each LingQ, for example you could record yourself saying the word.
Note that you can move from yellow LingQ to yellow LingQ in the text using the left/right arrow keys just as you did with blue words.
Notice the 1-click status bar up at the top. You will find this indicator in many places including the Vocabulary page and vocabulary tests. Here is where you adjust the status of a LingQ based on how well you know it.
You will also benefit from using the Tag function. Whether for specialized vocabulary or hard to remember grammar patterns or any other reason, tagging lets you review related terms in the Vocabulary section.
All the LingQs you have created are found in the Vocabulary section. In the Due for Review SRS tab you will find the LingQs due for immediate review.
The Spaced Repetition System (SRS) will schedule these terms for you to review based on an algorithm which uses the “status” of your LingQs (1,2,3, or 4), and which is also used to schedule your LingQs of the day.
LingQs of the day are sent at intervals of 1, 3, 7, 15, 30, and 90 days. To activate the last two intervals, click on status 4 twice. Or you can select “never” once you know the word fully.
If you have an Android or iOS device, you can use our iLingQ app to read and listen to your lessons and review your LingQs on the go.
Learning words and phrases is elusive. Don’t let this upset you. Some words stick right away and others take longer to learn.
If you combine lots of reading and listening with some dedicated vocabulary review, the words will gradually become part of your vocabulary. Trust the system and learn to enjoy your language learning.
