>> TIM TAYLOR: Casey now, with what may be the best college baseball team in the area.
>> CASEY COLEMAN: And that college would be Baldwin-Wallace.
Their baseball team has been practicing indoors in the gym
but today they left for their annual tour of Florida.
As Dan Coughlin reports, it could be the start of something big.
>> BOB FISHER: Well, I think it could be one of, if not the best team we've ever had.
>> MARTY KELLY: It makes me feel very proud, being in my last year as a senior
coming a long way since freshman year, this program's increased.
>> DAN COUGHLIN: The Baldwin-Wallace baseball team opens it's season with unprecedented enthusiasm.
Eight of nine regulars are back from a squad that last year had a team batting average of .340
and set school records in all offensive categories.
Third baseman Joe Velky here hit ten home runs last season.
That's a school record!
Junior right fielder Dave Rozzo batted .470 over the last half of last season.
Left fielder Erik Young hit .393 as a freshman.
Catcher Marty Kelly is a four-year starter.
He threw out 22 of the last 28 runners who attempted to steal against him last spring.
But coach Bob Fisher says this year's Yellow Jackets have impressive numbers in another department.
>> BOB FISHER: Our starters average a GPA of 3.17
so that's not too awfully bad in terms of the academics and the classroom.
>> DAN COUGHLIN: So, how far can this team go?
It's ranked ninth in the country in Division III in preseason polls.
>> MARTY KELLY: First of all, take care of our southern tour.
Then come back up north and worry about the OAC, and then work towards the nationals.
Sure, that's in the back of our mind.
>> DAN COUGHLIN: Dan Coughlin, Newscenter 8, with the Yellow Jackets in Berea.
>> CASEY COLEMAN: And a reminder:
Notre Dame vs. North Carolina tonight at nine right here on TV 8.
