Earlier this year,
Google launched an ambitious project
to give people virtual access
to some of the most famous
art museums throughout the world.
While it is still in the early stages of development,
the Google Art Project already involves
seventeen major art museums.
In its current form, the site offers
an impressive example
of how online and offline experiences
can come together
to enrich the lives of consumers.
But, in order for the site to reach its full potential,
Google will need to find ways
to make the experience more social
while providing additional
contextual information to visitors.
The good news is
that virtual events provide a template
for many of the ways
in which Google could create
a more immersive environment.
Specifically, unlike the Google Art Project,
most virtual events use audio,
video, and presentation-based information
to provide context to visitors.
Google also might want to consider
creating a separate area for conversations.
This could take the form of a
lounge area or other public space
within the museum.
From this space, visitors
could also link to their favorite works of art,
drawing new attendees to the project.
