in the history of modern glass. He ran a factory. He made furniture. He was passionately interested
in gardens and horticulture. He wrote poetry. But we think of him first and foremost as
a most ori ginal designer of glass.\'94

\par }{\b\f1 David: }{\f1 \'93}{\i\f1 He designed one-of-a-kind things, which the crafts people
in his factory made. He brought int o his designs many natural forms - forms out
of the gardens, which he loved. And on this chalice-shaped vessel, he has an enormous
flying dragonfly with two huge eyes and outspread wings.\'94

\par }{\b\f1 Narrator: }{\f1 Galle used many different techniques to transform glass from
an ordinary everyday object into an imaginativ e expression of beauty. Acid etching to make
some of the glass look dull instead of shiny was one technique. Applying hot bits of glass
to the surface was another. Take a look and see if you can find what parts of the dragonfly
were done with applied gl ***.
