Horse breeders from all parts of Brazil are gathered this week in Avaré, in the interior of São Paulo State.
They are participating in the National Championship of the Quarter Horse breed.
One of the most valued breeds of the country. This type of horse is known by its versatility
and also by its grace. It can be used in rides and in competitions.
João Lucas already tries his first loops. For him it is a game. He sees his father and his brother
doing the tricks and he wants to do the same. He gets the rope and tries to loop.
The passion for the animals is in the blood of all who visit and participate in the
34th Quarter Horse National Championship. The breed that represents more than 50% of the
equines in the whole world, was created in the USA by around 400 years ago.
It arrived in Brazil 56 years ago. These animals draw attention because of their muscles,
which make them very agile. It is a strong and fast horse. The name Quarter Horse is
just because of that. In a quarter of a mile race, it is the fastest horse in the world.
Being the great stars of the event, the animals get all the attention. They are combed,
they get a lot of food and also daily showers.
The animal gets more relaxed and tender. He likes to take a daily shower.
But it is inside the competitions that they really show their true potential.
In the calf looping challenge, the points come as a sum of ability and technique when riding the horse.
We practice during the whole year to come and try to do our best here.
In the pole bending competition, riders use the horse's speed in a fight against the clock.
It is unforgettable to come and see this. A very interesting experience. It is great. I recommend.
We came here today to see her father in the calf looping challenge. We are supporting him.
Beyond the competitions, the auctions are a really expected moment too. The value for a horse like this one
goes over 500 thousand Reais. In just one week, the negotiations here can reach 13 million Reais.
In 2010, the breed's horse trade in Brazil reached 150 million Reais.
Organisers believe that 30 thousand people will come to the event in Avaré until Sunday.
