Could you please tell me what sort of technical issues have you worked on?
I graduated from a Marine Engineering programme in Istanbul Technical University in 1982.
After graduation, first I worked on passenger and then cargo ships.
I have a sea service history of approximately 14 years.
Whilst working at sea, I studied Economics in Istanbul University as well.
I worked on board ships as engineering officer, second engineer and chief engineer.
After I had worked as a chief engineer, I moved onto my current position.
Having worked for 2 years as chief engineer,
I have worked in this ashore position since 1994.
In case you wish to work ashore, what sort of additional skills do you need to acquire?
If should I express my personal opinion, in Turkey,
the educational system is based on science;
social science seemed to be left out.
Therefore, after I completed my education in science and technology,
I went towards social science.
I think the managers wishing to work ashore have to have ability in terms of social science.
That is, they have a lack of Management and Economics education.
As for the reason, there are significant problems in budgeting, planning, team work etc.
They can not integrate themselves within the system of company.
I believe that if there should be an improvement for additional education, it should be in terms of social sciences.
In this profession or your current position,
what sort of physical or characteristics skills should one acquire to apply?
First, one should be physically enduring.
This is because it is a tough profession; sometimes it is hard to find time to have a rest.
Communication is of paramount importance since people on board ships
need information and decision-makings mechanism should be progressive with this regard.
Especially because of the geographical conditions of our country,
ships can be anywhere around the world and you need to be able to cooperate ignoring the time difference.
On the other hand, one should be available to go aboard the ship if required,
the reason being to see the case personally.
Personal health conditions should be good.
In terms of characteristics, there should be persistence and
research efforts to keep efficient and up to date knowledge about
new considerations as well as a sense of judgement.
Could you please shortly describe what this sort of person should do in such position?
Sometimes I ask that sort of question to new generations.
Honesty is important in such a position.
A person should also be self confident,
because it is sometimes required for him/her to make people
carry out some qualified work on board ship via phone conversations.
Loyalty to your company is of paramount importance in summary.
I have witnessed some cases and people in companies
that do not really appreciate the conditions which directly affect success.
These kinds of effects can reflect on themselves and result in inconsistency.
The other issues are depending upon the person him/herself.
At the same time, it is known that decision-making under pressure is very substantial.
But there is something more precise.
After decision-making, one should be able to think and decide again under pressure
to confirm and change if applicable for further analysis since the circumstances may change in time.
It can be seen in the maritime industry, that
when a considerable and bright idea is presented,
it is sealed by the community.
Some people tend to ignore and destroy the ideas which I think is wrong.
Thank you for cooperation.
Thank you...
