There are many quit smoking aids available to you. There are nicotine replacement therapies,
and then there are two medications that are non-nicotine aids. One is called Wellbutrin,
also known as Zyban, also generically known as buproprion. The other is called Chantix.
Chantix just came out in 2006. Buproprion's been around for a long time.
So buproprion is a drug that's used as an anti-depressant to treat a few disorders such
as seasonal affect disorder, and it's a mood stabilizer, but in a certain amount of milligrams,
it also helps people quit smoking.
Chantix is a nicotine blocker. It blocks the receptor so that when you smoke, you don't
get the pleasurable effects from your tobacco smoke. So when you take a puff of a cigarette,
you usually go, ahh, because it's a release of dopamine. The way Chantix works is it blocks
the release of dopamine, so that all you're getting is the stinky taste of the cigarette,
and the stinky smell, and you're not getting the beautiful dopamine release, so you're
wondering why you're even doing it.
Whatever you choose to do, I strongly encourage you to talk to your medical providers, your
doctors, your pharmacists, all the people that are in your support system medically,
so that you can decide which one is best for you.
