Welcome to the 6th video tutorial in the Read&Write Gold v.11 series:
Spell Checking and Dictionary Features (Part 1)
Throughout this series of instructional videos, you'll learn how to use Read&Write Gold to
assist you with your reading, writing, studying, research and organization. This video series
has been created to help you become more familiar with all of the main aspects of the program.
In this video, I will look at the following objectives:
1. How to use the "Spell Check" feature 2. How to use the "Spell as I Type" feature
3. How to correctly setup the "Spelling Settings"
Before we get started, you should already have the Read&Write Toolbar loaded and set
to the Writing Toolbar for consistency. You can do this by clicking the textHELP logo
repeatedly until the correct tool bar appears. Or you can do this by clicking the little
white arrow next to the right of the textHELP button like this and then moving your cursor
to "Current Toolbar", and then selecting "Writing Features".
Also, if you wish to follow along with this demo, please download the Word file below
from my Drop Box account that has been deliberately riddled with spelling mistakes. If you are
ready, then we will begin!
1 -- Using the Spell Checker: How to Spell Check a Document
As you can see, on the left I have a Microsoft Word document opened with a paragraph of text
already typed out with a number spelling corrections that need to be addressed. With the Writing
Toolbar opened, simply click on the "Spell Check" button like this.
You will notice on the right of the screen, a Spelling Helper window appears with the
first misspelled word in the document highlighted in red. This area contains the line of text
that it has identified as incorrect, this area contains the correction text box, and
the word list box is located here. The definition of each word in the list box appears on the
right and depending on the word, the user can choose to see the definition of the word
as a noun, verb, adjective or adverb by clicking here.
Looking back at the first misspelled word, "volcano" which is highlighted in red, you
will notice some options within the Spelling Helper window. The CHANGE button allows you
to change the misspelled word to a correct one by highlighting a word from the Word List
with your mouse and then selecting the CHANGE button to automatically change the word, like
this.
The Spelling Helper window automatically moves onto the next misspelled word which in this
example is, "tectonic". The first word in the word list "tectonic" is highlighted. If
you are not sure that you are selecting the correct word, you can read or listen to the
definition of the word by moving your mouse inside the definition box and clicking PLAY
like this [TTS: Tectonic. Pertaining to the structure or movement of the earth's crust;
"tectonic plates"; "tectonic valleys"]. I have this word misspelled twice in the document,
so if I want to correct both of them at the same time, I simply choose the CHANGE ALL
button like this. You will notice that both of the words "tectonic" have been corrected.
If you get to a word that you know is spelled correctly, you can add this "custom" word
to the dictionary so that it does not indicate that it is an error the next time you use
it. You do this by clicking on the ADD CUSTOM button like this. The word "Rinjani" will
now be ignored.
Finally, the word "iland" is highlighted in red because it is missing the "s". If there
are words that you misspell the same way every time, you can add an auto-correction so that
Read&Write GOLD will automatically correct the word each time you spell it incorrectly.
Just make sure "island" is highlighted in the word list box and then click on the AUTO
CORRECT button.
Finish completing the spell check for the rest of the document and remember, you can
always select IGNORE if you don't want Read&Write GOLD to do anything.
2. Using the Spell as I Type feature What you just saw was an example of how to
use spell check on a completed document, but you can also use the spell check feature as
you type a document if that is your preference. This is how you do it.
Click on the little white arrow to the right of the Spell Check button and check off "Spell
as I Type" which is at the top of the drop down list. Open a new Microsoft Word document
and type the following sentence exactly as you see here on your screen.
A volcaneo tends to occur where tectonic plets mmet.
You will notice that as soon as you type the word "volcaneo", the Spelling Helper window
appears just like before. You have all of the same options that we looked at previously
from this point on. Once you select an option, it returns you back to your document to continue
typing.
3. How to change the spelling settings to Canadian/American and advanced dictionaries
You can change what spelling mistakes the Spell Checker looks for, the search methods
it uses and the different vocabularies that it checks words against by clicking on the
little white arrow to the right of the Spell Check button and selecting Spelling Options.
Then click on the Settings button like this. The Spelling Options window appears.
You have some options within the ignore List as you can see here -- if you prefer that
Read&Write ignore certain words, such as words that are in ALL CAPS or domain names like
www.texthelp.com, you can check them off right here.
Your search methods can be changed inside this box here -- you can tell Read&Write to
search for anagrams, extra letters, missing letters etc. I leave them all checked off
as the default.
Finally, and this is the big one, you will want to make sure that you change the vocabulary
from UK English which is the default, to US English for most users and if you are an adult
user of the software, you will want to be sure to check off Science, Medical, Biology
and Towns and Cities to have those terms all included in your Spelling Options. Be sure
to click OK to save your settings.
Remember that once you have taken the time to make changes to your settings, you will
want to save your user settings to a flash drive or memory stick so that you can take
them with you wherever you use Read&Write GOLD. For more information on how to do this,
please refer to Video #1 in this series.
