Hi I am Li Evans, I am author of Social Media Marketing, Engaging Strategies for Twitter,
Facebook & Other Social Media. I'm back with another of the 45 Social Media Insights Over
45 Days that are appearing on SMMarketingBook.com. These go in conjunction with this book that
is being publishes on Que press on June 24, 2010. These videos highlight a chapter each
day and this helps you decide if you really want to purchase the book or not. It give
high level tips in one to two minutes about a certain chapter and today's chapter is Chapter
33, You Get What You Give.
The first tip I have for you with "You Get What You Give" is "You Need to Invest in Your
Resources" to implement your social media strategy. If you think a social media strategy
is about registering a whole bunch of accounts and putting your name and your information
out there and its a set and forget it type of situation, you're going to be sadly disappointed.
It doesn't work that way. If you aren't out there actually engaging and giving your own
experiences or listening, you're not going to get anything out of social media. It just
doesn't work, it just doesn't happen automatically just because you set up the accounts. So that's
tip number one.
Tip number two is that "You Have to Give Valuable Content". With that what I mean is that you
have to give what the community thinks is going to be valuable. What do they find valuable?
It could be articles, it could be music, it could be handouts you send to them in the
mail because you talked to them or it could be a PDF file, you never know ... or it could
be just engaging conversations and listening to their stories. Different communities have
different values. You need to find out what is of value to that community and give it
to them.
The last tip for this chapter is "Rewards Come in All Sizes". You want to make sure
you are rewarding these communities that you are engaging with. They are sharing their
stories. They are taking time out of their day, so how do you reward them? You can reward
them with special gifts or you can reward them by saying thank you, or even writing
them a thank you note -- a hand written one. How many of those do you get a day? Probably
not many and they are noticeable, people remember those as well.
Those are your three tips today for Chapter 33, "You Get What You Give", in the book Social
Media Marketing, Engaging Strategies for Twitter, Facebook & Other Social Media. I'm Li Evans
and this is a series called 45 Social Media Insights Over 45 Days, appearing on SMMarketingBook.com
to go in conjunction with the book. So stop back tomorrow we'll have another chapter with
some more highlights for you.
