Hello everyone, this is Mari Miyazawa and today I'm going to show you how to make a Matryoshka Doll Sandwich.
For this recipe you need white bread, ham, egg salad, boiled carrot, and seaweed.
Here I have a bento box already stuffed with a variety of fillings.
To make the Matryoshka Doll, we're going to make a round sandwich and put it here in the top.
If you have a square bento box, don't worry; I'll show you how to make it look like a Matryoshka Doll at the end of this tutorial.
Alright, first you want to find a round cookie cutter or bowl and make sure it fits the size of your bento, like this.
Then, use it to cut out two circular pieces of bread for your sandwich.
For square bentos, if one slice is enough just cut the bread in half and remove the edges.
We're going to cut the bread into round pieces like this.
Here I happen to have a thick slice of bread, so the two pieces fit perfectly in the bento box when stacked.
If you're working with thinner bread or need larger pieces, it's not a problem if the lower piece isn't a perfect circle so please use as much of the bread as needed.
Today I'm going to make an egg salad sandwich
but if you're going to make a sandwich with meat and cheese, you can use the same tool as before to cut the ingredients into a circle.
That way you can make all the pieces of the sandwich the same size. It should look something like this.
You place the sandwich in the bento like this.
Then you use toppings to make the Matryoshka Doll.
This time we're going to use the cookie cutter from before to cut a circle of ham.
Don't cut in the center, but leave a little less than 1cm of space from the edge when you cut.
Then you cut right about here.
Put this on the bread and fold over the lower portion to make the Matryoshka's silhouette.
Now we're going to make the face and hair.
First create her eyes with seaweed by using a seaweed cutter.
If you have a cutter with a musical note shape, you can make cute eyes with eyebrows.
Cut the tip of the musical note like this to make the eye shape.
This gives her a charming appearance as if she's looking off to the side.
Like this, you can use your musical note cutter in a different way.
The seaweed is the same on both sides, so you can flip it or place it however you like.
Today, we're going to have her looking at us.
Then, cut about half a circle from the remaining seaweed.
And place it under the ham to make her bangs, like this.
Eyeball the second piece like this, and place it on the other side of her head. The seaweed is secured under the ham, and your Matryoshka has a set of beautiful bangs.
For the mouth, cut a piece off a straw and use it to poke two holes in a slice of boiled carrot. Cut out a crescent moon shape as well by poking a third hole slightly overlapping where you made one before.
This is the mouth.
If you place it on like this, your Matryoshka is smiling.
Then, taking the first two circles you cut, you can give her cheeks a cute blush and you have an energetic little girl.
You can cut a heart from the rest of the carrot to use as a broach for her scarf as well.
Or, you can cut off a piece of the heart like this and make a mitten for her.
It looks like she's holding down her scarf with her hands.
And now your cute Matryoshka Doll is done!
If you have a square bento, the curves of the muffler will create the contour of the Matryoshka's head, so as long as you make the other parts of her face as I explained, there shouldn't be a problem.
If you happen to have a circular bento like this it does make it easier - but it's not necessary, so please try it yourself!
