Hello internet. This an unboxing of the Canon 5D Mark II. There are a few out there so we're
going to do our best to make this one worth your time.
First, a word about us. We are Skyscope Creative, a video production startup based in Massachusetts.
We just got a new Mark II and it seemed like a good opportunity to talk about why as videographers
we still opted for it over the newer Mark III.
One of the bigger upgrades with the Mark III was the improvement from 9 focus points to
61. But since we exclusively shoot video we always want total control over our focus anyway.
The MarkIII does build on the shooting capabilities of the MarkII in a couple of ways though.
At higher ISOs the amount of noise is significantly less, but the Mark II is still head and shoulders
above cameras like the T3i.
With the Mark III you can also manually adjust audio gain while recording, simplifying capturing
audio straight to the card. But since we monitor and record our audio separately on aTascam
DR-100 and sync it up in post, this addition didn't tempt us either.
Event videographers will be happy to hear that the Mark III has a maximum clip length
of 30 minutes, which is quite the improvement over the MarkII's 12 minute max. But as
business videographers, we almost never approach the clip limit anyway.
In the end, the incremental improvements of the MarkIII didn't justify its increased
price to us. For half the money, we get a camera that's 95% it's equal.
