My name is Kelly Bekele and I’m a senior studying accounting and international business
here at UT. My big idea was to bring a chapter of Special Spaces to the university.
Special Spaces is a national, nonprofit, 501-3C organization. What we do is build bedrooms
for children facing life-challenging illnesses through donations and fundraising. Special
Spaces actually originated right here in Knoxville by a woman named Jennifer Swain. Since then
we’ve grown to 35 chapters across the country.
Special Spaces UT became an official organization earlier this year on February 28. Since then
we’ve gotten over 40 members and we got to build our very first room this summer for
a little girl named Madison.
What we do is go talk to the child. We learn what they like and dislike and what their
dream room would be. For her, her dream room was a Disney Princess room. And we tried to
make that a reality for her.
If you would like to join Special Spaces, all you have to do is go to go.utk.edu and
click join.
