Midwives are health care professionals with hospital privileges.
They are highly educated and standards for care are regulated by the College of Midwives
of Ontario. You do not have to pay for a midwife -- it's
covered by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.
Midwives can attend home and hospital births, and soon birth centres will be open in Ottawa
and Toronto. There's no age limit for using a midwife's
services -- as long as you are pregnant, there's no such thing as being "too young" or "too
old" for a midwife. Midwives provide all of your care for pregnancy,
birth and the first six weeks after birth, and you can have all the same tests and appointments
with a midwife as you would with a physician. Midwifery services are available across the
province -- there are hundreds of midwives working in urban, rural and remote locations.
