If your teenager has their learner permit and is ready to drive,
it's up to you to make sure that they're properly protected while they're learning how
to drive
so how do you do that? First things first
call you insurer to add your teen to your insurance policy
as soon as they have their learners permit. This make sure that they're
properly covered
but don't worry since they're required to have driver supervision at all times
your rates won't be affected until they can't legally drive on their own.
Next, consider enrolling your teen in a drivers education course.
It not only helps them to become a better driver, but most insurers offer discounts
to drivers who've passed a course.
Some things to look for when selecting a school would be
the amount of time spent in the classroom versus in the car.
It should be a good balance of both. Also
ask about the program. Will they teach the basics to pass the test
or will they provide the skills your teen will need to become a safe and confident driver?
Once your teenager is legally allowed to drive,
call your insurance company and let them know that your teen's driving status has
changed.
It's also a good time to let the insurance company know
if your teen has passed a driver's education course so they can apply any
discounts.
If you need more information about how or when to add a teenager to your
insurance policy,
speak with your insurance advisor they can help answer any questions you may
have.
