The Shanghai Conservatory of Music is working with two well-known symphony orchestras to
set up a music academy for performers. Zhang Ningben tells us more in this edition of Expat
Extra.
The conservatory will work with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic.
School officials say they tried to set up a similar program 8 years ago with the Central
Conservatory of Music in Beijing, but that program never got off the ground. They promise
the new academy is different, mainly due to the involvement of top foreign musicians.
"We have made a big change in our faculty. That means we will have more chief conductors
and senior performers from some famous orchestras to tell students how to perform on international
stages as well as teaching them some very exclusive performing skills," said Xu Mengdong.
The school will open in September, 2014, and enrol 30 new students every year for a four
year program. Xu says the school will provide oportunities for students to attend regular
training with the two professional orchestras and even perform in official concerts.
