There can be many different causes of low mood and depression, and the cause may vary
from person to person. Investigating the cause of depression, and then creating a custom
treatment plan to address the cause, is what we want to do. In addition to past trauma
or current life situations that may be leading to depression, we want to thoroughly evaluate
any potential biochemical causes of depression. To determine which natural medicine therapies
are most likely to improve mood and sense of well-being, it can be helpful to test for
nutrient deficiencies, thyroid hormone levels, and systemic hormone balance. Now let’s
talk about treatment: A proper diet is key in our ability to achieve and maintain emotional
health. A whole foods organic diet, that is rich in fresh produce and protein will provide
the raw materials necessary to create healthy levels of mood enhancing neurotransmitters,
such as serotonin and dopamine. Omega 3 essential fatty acids, like those found in fish oil,
are also extremely impactful in improving mood. Just as it is important for us to take
in nutrients that promote brain health, it is also important for us to avoid foods and
substances that can lead to depressed moods. Alcohol, sugar, caffeine, artificial food
additives and even food intolerances can lead to depression and irritability for many, so
these types of foods are best avoided as you work towards recovery from depression. Many
people will start to feel a noticeable improvement in mood within the 1st couple weeks of making
these dietary changes. Some additional nutrients that can be very helpful in alleviating depression
are B complex, B12, vitamin D, SAMe, and tryptophan or 5HTP. For those who take prescription medication
for depression, be sure to consult with a doctor before adding new supplements, so that
you are well-educated on which therapies can be safely combined and at what dose. If you
would like to change medications or eliminate your current medication, again this should
be done under the care of a doctor. One way to get rapid improvement in energy and mood,
is to quickly deliver nutrients directly into the muscle or blood stream, with therapies
like B vitamin injections or IV nutrient infusions. It is also very important that hormonal causes
of depression are addressed. hypothyroidism should ruled out in those suffering with depression.
In addition to thyroid hormone evaluation, systemic hormone balance is another area that
should be thoroughly evaluated when an individual is battling depression. Low levels of thyroid
hormone, estrogen, testosterone, DHEA, and cortisol may all contribute to depression.
Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy can be very helpful for many individuals who
are suffering with depression. Other great ways to improve mood and combat depression
are exercise, daily joy practices, positive affirmation work, seeking out the company
of supportive friends and family, and working with a therapist. The better our self-awareness
and self-love capacity are, the more we will be able to maintain self-care practices like
proper diet, supplementation, exercise, human connection and adequate play and rest that
will support our ability to live happy, healthy lives. If you would like help with the evaluation
