Hey, this is Sam Rogers, The One Mouth Band
coming at you live from
the Louisiana Bayou.
I'm here examining some of the areas
that have been damaged by salt water.
It was bad here before Katrina
now it's gotten a lot worse.
We're up about 500-feet.
All this used to be land --
well, more like swamp or marsh, really.
BEFORE
the freshwater mixes with saltwater
in a slower, more balanced way
that this fragile environment can handle.
providing vital habitat for many species
at various parts of their life cycle
AFTER
arbitrary manmade waterways
slice through to the gulf
allowing saltwater to flow right in
killing the plants and animals
laying waste to miles and miles
that once thrived here
of our important coastal wetlands
There are some areas here which
there's a group called Voice of the Wetlands
they're trying to restore it,
and get more freshwater coming in
to offset the saltwater
which is just eating away
at all of that you see here.
