OK, so IDA Diary number 7. I wish it was week 7
Best news is that BLENNZ, that is the Blind and Low Vision Education network, now has
a YouTube channel. So Blennz1 went live on Friday after a week
worth of learning, pretty intensive, on my part.
And many thanks to anyone behind the scenes, who has just helped, really.
Actually getting the video up was OK. I hadn't really thought through the
the accessibility side of it!! So particularly in relation to captions and
transcripts and how to attach them to a YouTube video.
So I asked a few people and looked around online.
First found a service called CaptionTube. which is a free service where you can move
your movie into CaptionTube and then play it and stop it when you want
to add a caption. And it all looked absolutely gorgeous but
it didn't work. It just wouldn't hold my captions so that
was a no go. And then I found a place called AST, a kind
of syncronising service and where you can send them your video, and
they then basically, do all the work for you
captions and transcripts, for hopefully a nice price.
So I registered with them and checked it out with
my senior management team and got the thumbs up
but they didn't get back to me very quickly. So still left in the mean time with what to
do. One suggestion was to go back to iMovie and
to add the captions there after a bit of thought, I wasn't that keen
I want the captions to be able to be turned on
and off and for users to have that choice. So went back to YouTube and looked at the
transcript option and bit the bullet and played the video very
slowly over an hour or so and wrote down everything
that was said both audio and text, and uploaded that to
YouTube. because YouTube can make, has a function where
it makes it's own captions from that transcript text.
And it did that and it was mostly OK. But there was all this goobledegook at the
beginning. that I didn't really know what to do with.
And then it showed me that I could download this transcript of captions
and I downloaded it and it was actually a text file.
and I could delete all the gobledegook and could
reload the transcript because it was actually a
captions file and had all the time checks in it which
which may sound all a bit technical but I will
put some illustrations up so we can see. And that's worked beautifully
I think as I do more and more I'll get better at it
And it will be interesting to compare the time
it takes me to put captions on compared if we flick it through to AST technologies.
and how much they charge for their service. that will be something that is in the report
at the end. Please it would be fantastic if you can take
a look. Any feedback would be cool.
Just around what it looks like. what it feels like to use.
I'm just messing with playlists and its something I want to talk with families
about. what's meaningful for them in terms of the
language that we use. Because often in education we have family
speak and teacher speak and it will be good to talk to
families first-hand about what's useful for them.
And on the subject of families, I met with Gary
Veenstra, the Child and Family social worker, RNZFB
and we have set up the first user group meeting for May 13th, so that will be great to get
some first-hand feedback. So really good week, bit of a hump
so it will be really good to get some more
videos up so we can see how it feels Cheers
