Pentek R50 Hey everyone, Aquaman here with FilterDoctor.com.
Today we’re looking at the Pentek R50. This is an industry standard size cartridge
approximately 10 inches long by 2 ½ inches in diameter, which means it’s going to fit
into a vast array of industry standard size filter housings, like for example, the popular
Pentek 158642, that you see here. Now, the R50 is a 50 micron, pleated polyester
sediment filter. That polyester is extremely durable and appropriate for untreated water
sources, because it’s bacteriostatic, meaning microorganisms cannot live and grow on this
media. And, the durability factor is very high, making this filter reusable and washable.
Simply remove it from the filter housing, put it under running water and gently scrub
the pleats. Then reinstall; and you’re back in business. Now, you can’t continue to
do this indefinitely, you’ll probably get three to five reuses out of a filter like
this. As I indicated it is appropriate for untreated
water because it’s bacteriostatic, and at 50 microns it’s not going to be the best
choice for fine sediment capture. Fifty microns is about twice the size of a speck of milled
flour, meaning that you really want to use this as a pre-filter, and follow up with something
more dense, like a 5 micron or a 1 micron to capture the fine particles if you want
to do that. Now, filter life is difficult to determine
because it’s going to depend on your unique circumstances. I would love to sit here and
tell you this filter will last for ‘x’ number of gallons, but if I did that, I’d
be lying to you because it’s going to depend on your unique circumstances. Someone who
has a high load of sediment and uses a great deal of water, is certainly going to go through
this cartridge much faster than someone who has a low level of sediment and is not using
that much water. You simply need to install it and learn from experience approximately
how long or how many gallons it’s good for. Again, this is the Pentek R50, and I’m your
host Aquaman with FilterDoctor.com. Thanks for watching.
