The CFDA is synonymous with fashion here in New York.
They are famous for seriously nurturing the American fashion industry -
countless careers have skyrocketed after receiving a coveted nod from the
CFDA Awards.
This spring, the CFDA is celebrating their 50 year anniversary with a
fabulous fashion exhibit at the Museum at FIT. The show is the brainchild
of CFDA President Diane Von Furstenberg, and it showcases 100 garments and
accessories of the CFDA’s most impactful creators of the last 50 years.
Interestingly:
Each living designer was asked to select a single ensemble that they feel
best represents their impact on the fashion world to be displayed
(instead of a curator selecting the pieces).
The result is an inspiring survey of how American style has evolved and
left its mark on the global fashion world, with sportswear and evening
pieces from fashion heavy-hitters like Bob Mackie, Oscar de la Renta,
Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, as well more contemporary designers like Marc
Jacobs, Tom Ford, Rodarte.
A few gorgeous pieces I zeroed in on:
The 70s vibrant bright red silk crepe strapless evening dress from Halston
A 50s era Traina-Norell gold sequin sheath dress with sequined-lined
cashmere coat that belonged to screen goddess Lauren Bacall.
The Thom Browne Men’s suite created entirely out of pheasant feathers
And a show-stopping black feather ensemble from Norma Kamali, created from
parachute cloth with a matching feather turban – fabulous!
The CFDA IMPACT show is up through April – so if you are in NY, make sure
you swing by!
