Hello, I'm Diego de los Reyes, and I want to talk with you about TV.
TV is a weird concept right now. Many people don't watch "TV" on an actual television device
anymore. And then we have stuff like the Netflix and Amazon originals. Is House of Cards TV?
I would say yes. But I totally understand if someone else feels differently.
It's a brand new world, and the rise of the internet has helped change and redefine this
term. However, for the purposes of this vlog I will refer to TV as the shows "traditionally"
produced. And yes, I realize that talking about TV on a show on the web is a bit ironic.
It's like...a snake eating its own tail.
So, that's why I would like to be a part of the Geek and Sundry family. It's a great step
in this brand new world, of producing quality content and delivering it in a new way.
And right now, talking about TV is amazing. There's so much good TV to watch. Shows like
The Sopranos and Arrested Development paved the way for Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad,
and even more Arrested Development.
There's also a lot of places to discuss it: Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, forums... And it's
a global discussion now. I can watch an episode, and immediately discuss it with people
on the US, on the UK, on the Netherlands... you name it.
There's always people that like what you like, and also people who don't like what you do
and waste no time in telling you so. But that's okay! (Unless you're rude, then shame on you)
Everyone has their opinion, and they are not inherently right or wrong. I don't like, for
example, Two and a Half Men, but if you do, okay! I'm not going to try and stop you from
enjoying it.
The only thing I want to do is talk. Let's geek out together about the stuff we love,
and discuss the stuff we may not. We can talk about an specific TV show and what works and
doesn't, or how to get into a new TV show.
We can also talk about general issues on TV, like spoilers and binge-watching.
So, a bit about myself, so you know my TV-credentials. I was a moderator for a couple of years at
the SpoilerTV forums, and I also wrote the TV column on the student newspaper at my university.
But pretty much what matters is that I watch a lot of TV and read a lot about TV, because
I truly believe it can be art. I love TV.
It all started when I was young, and enjoyed my share of Hey Arnold! and Power Rangers.
Those were my childhood crushes. But then Lost premiered.
Wait. Wait. I know: Lost is controversial. And I would love (and will) discuss it further
sometime later. But that show, with its gorgeous shots, addictive story-lines, and excellent
performances really showed me what TV could be.
I'm about to talk specifics on Lost, that's why there's this flashing banner.
When Jack met Kate at the airport, and did the famous "We have to go back, Kate! We have
to go back!". My mind was metaphorically blown. and right there I was in for the ride. If
TV could be this, then I would watch as much as I could.
I know it was a flawed show, and I accept it. It's not the best show I've seen. But
it is, by far, my favorite.
But first, I want to know: What's your favorite TV show, and why? Be sure to hit it up in
the comments.
