thank you very much good afternoon everyone
I last time I did with these it was it was about exactly 10 years ago
and a lot has happened in my life in those
10 years and our industry is changed quite a bit
ten years ago
we sold about four million computers
a year and now we saw about 40 million computers here so it's about
about 10 times the volume and
there in some pretty dramatic things that are changing
in our in our industry I
in the year 2000 there were
about a hundred million devices that were connected
to the Internet and if you recall
you know at that time everybody was talking about okay it's the
it's the age of the Internet and the doc arms this is all very exciting
well you know by our calculations
by 2010 OB fourteen billion devices
attached to the Internet so it's actually still growing at a pretty
enormous space
if you saw to break that down and say well what are those devices
certainly got a lot of telephones
her almost four billion telephones
out there are many different shapes and sizes
about a billion PCs that are attached to the Internet and every day
about 500,000 new users
come onto the internet for the very first time in their lives
so it's a pretty staggering rate of growth in terms of the number of new
users and of course the vast majority of those new users
are in emerging countries
an emerging economies around the world you don't have five hundred thousand new
people the United States
getting on the internet or Western Europe so it's places like
Africa particularly northern Africa and the Middle East
where there's enormous growth course Asia
China India the all the former soviet republics
Latin America enormous growth in those countries and kinda following the
the growth love 11 a.m. telephone which is
which is a tremendous along with that
they're also real changes in and what people are doing with the devices and
kind of connectivity that that
that they have so you know when you first
experience computers you had monochrome
text you know then you had you know graphics and then you had
pictures then you had movies in high-definition and so
were now experiencing a massive
you know wave love high definition video
coming to the Internet and its its on demand and it's its you're able to pull
it
when you want it now all these users
and all these devices
and all this expansion in the
be in with any amounted to YouTube that you can send
mean that there's an enormous growth in the infrastructure
and you know certainly business opportunities for for companies like
ours
but also big responsibilities that come with that because
these devices draw a lot of power they consume our energy
and we as providers have to really
take special care into thinking about how do we
right energy consumption these devices down so that
we make on me much more efficient even as we're producing
you know more devices so
I you know it's been a been a pretty exciting a pretty exciting
time for me our company is about 24 years old now
and I'm i'm forty-three estar the company when I was 19
and I was the CEO the company for the first
twenty years of its life and then
was in the CEO for a for about two-and-a-half years now
I'm back in the CEO job for for about a year and a half
and a is also ensuring reflect on the last 10 years
where in our company had a a very
sort of monolithic strategy of growth
which you have to say a few if you grew the business by 10 times in units
that was that was said it was a pretty good thing but
there were some changes that were going on the industry with the enormous number
of new consumers coming online
the growth in emerging countries which caused us to come to alter our strategy
and you know we've kinda set the company in a new course and and now growing
again faster than the industry kinda back to the
the the historical growth pattern the company where we like to be growing
faster than our industry
so it's kinda it's kind of an amazing industry if you think about it
you know you say well what what is what is this industry really all about
well it's kinda about every industry in the world
it's about Medicine & Science in Education
and business and entertainment
and all forms I love entertainment or productivity
a running across every element of society
everywhere in the world so it's a it's a pretty broad
kinda business and so we skip to see a lot of things
countries I would say we we're we're we try to be pretty good at understanding
the
the technological imports and we try to be pretty good at understanding customer
requirements
the thing that is most hard to predict
are the compound inventions and these are usually created by customers of ours
where they take three or four things there are
commonly available to put them together in the crate an entirely new business or
entirely new way of doing things
but nobody really ever dispirited least we did
and we see a lot of that going on
you know so for example right now we see
in the Boston area a lot of genomic startups
that are buying large numbers of servers are usually we sell a company a server
we think we're located buying the server maybe they have
50 employees are 100 employees in the media server
well these are companies that have like 10 15 employees but they're buying
hundreds of servers
well at it is really fit into the the model that we have what are they doing
with their processing enormous amounts to date in there
there using the amazing computing power
to go solve big problems a lot of the problems out there
in science are fundamentally computational problems
and the great news is that the amount of computational power
that is and available and coming our industry
is just enormous and it's and it's not slowing down it also
great industry lotsa fun had a great time and
you know only just getting started soon
