The country's three mobile carriers are facing additional penalties from the nation's telecom
watchdog as they enter a 45-day government-ordered suspension of business on this Thursday.
The Korea Communications Commission says... it will levy more than 30-billion won, or
28-million U.S. dollars, in fines on all three carriers for igniting unfair competition and
overheating the market in January and February. The KCC will also suspend leading mobile carrier
SK Telecom and the number three player LG U-plus for seven and 14 days, respectively.
That's on top of the 45-day suspension issued by the ICT ministry -- a penalty on all three
carriers for providing illegal subsidies to lure potential customers.
During the suspension, two carriers are suspended at once and the companies are banned from
signing up new customers.
