Hi, my name is Sun K. Kwak. I started as a painter, and I was searching for a lot of
materials to express my ideas. I was looking for a direct expression because I always felt
that there was a big gap between me and the material. One day, black masking tape popped
up in my mind. [0:26] I went to the store to buy some on my way back to my studio. I
walked up a staircase, going up to the roofs that not many people use, and I began to tear
and draw with the tape, freely and with great enjoyment. It felt like black ink pouring
out over my fingers. It was very fresh, alive, and free.
I came to visit the Brooklyn Museum to think about this project. The expansion of space
is very interesting because of the structure. It's a rotunda area that is round, but divided
into four parts in the middle. And the outside is enfolding, like a square enfolding a circle,
a circle divided into four parts. Based on my initial response to the space,
I created a sketch using a digital image this time, which is not what I normally do. My
sketches describe the types of form I envision in the space and the direction in which they
will flow. The imagery is very abstract. Everyone can relate to it. Everyone has their own response
when they're entering, and when they're walking in and experiencing their own time and space.
