The United Nations Security Council met Wednesday
to discuss the situation in Iraq.
During the meeting, which was chaired by US Vice President Joe Biden,
the Security Council approved the closing of several mandates related to Iraq,
including on weapons of mass destruction and the oil for food program.
"Iraq is on the cusp of something remarkable...
something remarkable.
a stable self-reliant nation,
a just representative and accountable government
and a positive force for peace and stability in the region."
United Nations Secretary-General, Ban-ki Moon, called today's events
a "milestone" for the country but added that work still needs to be done.
"The country's development needs are considerable.
It remains essential to restore the basic services that make daily life bearable.
Access to education and health services
is likewise critical for the country's future."
Hoshyar Zebari, Iraq's Minister for Foreign Affairs.
"Iraq is a country blessed with rich natural and human resources.
However we continue to need international cooperation and support
to progress towards a stable, peaceful and prosperous future."
