A significant report was released today by the Children's Commissioner
relating to early childhood centres throughout the country.
The main focus of the report was children under two.
32,000 of these children attend an early childhood centre.
Close to 25% of those are Maori. Maiki Sherman has this report.
Children are the leaders of tomorrow.
So just how good are the services that care for them.
According to a significant
report released by the Children's Commissioner,
a number of childcare centres
are still not up to the expected standard
for those children under two years old.
He says the Government need to move quickly in addressing the issue.
Some childcare centres have unqualified people
so until that is addressed
only then will the standard rise in those affected centres.
According to the Commissioner, these findings are nothing new.
But they were also included in a recent report
by the Education Review Office (ERO).
At the moment a ratio of five children per teacher is accepted.
However, the commissioner has made the recommendation
that be decreased to just three.
It's better to allocate funding in these areas
rather than wait and be forced to do it once they fall into trouble.
According to the Minister of Education Anne Tolley,
the report is currently being analysed by her office
and a response is likely by next month.
