>> [ANCHOR]: Cyber theft has become a huge threat. Many major companies have been targeted
by cyber hackers. So what do you do? 13 WHAM’s Alexis Arnold explains how RIT is working
to make websites more secure.
>> [REPORTER]: As we get more connected online, we can also become more vulnerable to cyber
hackers.
>> [MENEELY]: I think we’re entering into a new world of cyber military.
>> [REPORTER]: Andy Meneely is an assistant professor of software engineering at RIT.
He said the cyber attack is triggered by vulnerabilities.
>> [MENEELY]: Software developers make a mistake in code and hackers can then exploit it.
>> [REPORTER]: Sometimes what we see online is too good to be true. Like this Southwest
Airlines post on Facebook, offering free tickets by clicking this link. It looked real to Jeff
Blanchard.
>> [BLANCHARD]: My daughter called me one night, about 10 o’clock at night and said
dad you’re Facebook account has been hacked. She had just received 13 straight hits from
me on my Facebook on her Facebook for free Southwest tickets.
>> [REPORTER]: Meneely says cyber theft will always be a problem in today’s society.
He stressed the need for experts to design secure software. RIT has a new department
devoted for just that.
>> [MENEELY]: I’m studying those bugs, those vulnerabilities that are being exploited in
the wild still. I’m looking at what developers could have done to prevent it. I’m looking
at how developers could have found that vulnerability before they had released their software.
>> [REPORTER]: Meneely says we don’t need to live in fear, just use some common sense.
A lesson learned from Blanchard.
>> [BLANCHARD]: If you’re not sure what it is, just delete it and get rid of it. Alexis
