In this series, we're going to talk about some things women can do to keep themselves
safe while traveling or when they're out abroad. Another situation that might evolve when you're
traveling or even when you're here locally in town, is carjacking. The rule of thumb
is if someone presents a weapon, a firearm or even a knife if they can reach you, it's
not worth your life to protect your vehicle. You want to get out of the car, let them have
it. You don't want to go with them. So, if I come to the car and I give her the gun,
I say, "give me your car," I want her out of the car right away. She's not going to
fight. She's going to get out of the car, leave the keys and just take off. Move, move,
move. If she allows me to keep her in the car, she's putting her life in grave danger
because now, I've committed a felony. I have a witness. I might get nervous, maybe I'm
on drugs. She doesn't want to be anywhere near me. It's much better to report the car
stolen, file a police report, as hard as that may be to do, but do not stay with the car.
Do not go with the gunman unless it's absolutely unavoidable. It's very likely that something
bad will happen to you if you leave with an armed gunman, especially if it's someone who's
obviously as violent as a carjacker. Obviously, things may change if you have a child in the
back seat. You know, you want to make sure that your kid's out. Just let, cooperate with
the gunman, let him know, hey the car's yours, I don't want it. Here's the keys, take it.
You need to get out of the car, get away from gunman as fast as possible. If there is a
child in the back, make sure you articulate that to the gunman. He doesn't want to be
guilty of not only of carjacking but kidnapping as well. On the issue of whether a gun might
be fake or not, just do what the gunman says. Comply as much as possible. Get away from
him. His penalty will be the same whether it's a fake gun or a real gun, but I don't
want you taking a chance on it being a fake gun if it's real, end up getting shot, injured
or having someone else getting shot or injured.
