I chose civil engineering because I wanted to help people besides getting involved in
the medical field. I've always been interested in engineering ever
since I was a kid starting off in middle school when I competed in my science olympiad competition.
In a way I've always had a knack just to figure things
out and it's kind of a blessing that I've kind of fallen onto this major and I've been
enjoying it ever since. Going into transportation, if I do land
somewhere in transportation, I would definitely do a bridges project. Just because I've always
enjoyed working on something that's small and to see it come
to life and just grow. That's the beauty of civil engineering is that you're actually
making a contribution to something that you can go back and look at.
Even though it's maybe something as small as determining what paint you need on a road
or even growing on to designing an entire building. You can always
look back at that project, something you've put on paper, and it's come out to a real
life scale. I mean you can always tell a kid,"Here's a
bunch of stuff. Build something, you're an engineer. Yay." They have to understand what
they're doing and that's one of the things I strive as a coach is yes coaching
them is one thing, but I want to make sure they understand what they're doing. They're
asking questions. They're learning from this because that's
more important than just winning the competition I want them to take this and then maybe apply
it to somewhere else in life because it's really applicable anywhere.
