Its surprisingly how much junk ends up in our waterways.
-That's not good.
How everyday actions can cause a negative impact.
-It's repulsive! urgh!
And when it rains, mud, litter and chemicals
are washes straight into our waterways. ~la la la~
Huaaa!!!
Good morning and greetings of Malaysia
River pollution problems today are becoming more common
because of no initiative taken by the likes of litterers.
Therefore, our crew has been looking into one place in Skudai River
which is said to be the most polluted river in Malaysia.
Now, we are around the area of our case study
which is located in Kampung Laut.
As you can see, this drain is also one of the sources
that later will flow into the river in this Kampung Laut.
This is Sungai Skudai, where the flow is from my left
to my right.
And in front of me, there is a construction site that is still under construction.
Which also discharges their sewerage into this river.
Those displays were displays taken a day before the rain
And the following are the displays taken a day after the rain.
Follow our display.
As you can see, the river condition after rain
is much worse compared to its condition before the rain.
This shows that waste disposal is the main cause of pollution in Skudai River.
Let us follow our interview with uncle Basiron,
one of the villagers in Kampung Laut.
F: This just for our study purposes. Nothing more.
We are students.
The trash over there, is there anyone pick it up?
- Trash? TC: Yes.
No, the trash is always have been dumping here.
F: Oh, this is usually a place for dumping?
-Yes, since many buildings have trashes,
and they got many waste with no place to dump,
on this bank, then they just dump the waste here. But now it's alright since the bank is high.
Ana: But if it is rain?
-If rain it is normal,
but in year 2000, my house had many flood sometimes up till here.
Really.
F: Then how many times does it flood in a year?
- Long ago, in a week, I washed then
a week later then it's flooding again.
But long ago it was always flood here, in year 2000.
But now Alhamdulillah the flood is not so much.
But if there is, up till here can be receding in a night. But now is reduce.
F: Then was the trash was sent here? -Yes, by lorry.
By lorry?
People usually dumping here.
F: Where does the waste comes from?
- From the nearby buildings where the people works,
they dump the waste here
Since it cannot be dumping everywhere, plus no proper place to dump.
So they dump it on this river bank.
Ana: How about the bricks, the marbles, and others,
is it from the nearby houses?
- Actually, whenever there is a building that is done and have a waste,
they need to dump the waste.
F & Ai: Oh. So they will dump it here?
- Yes, since the building have extra waste, and no place to dump it.
F: So after they dump here do they burn it?
- I burned them. When there are wooden, I burnt them.
F: Oh it is you that burnt them. Since there are a lot.
- Yes I burnt them all.
Ai: If not it will drift later ?
- Yes. Sometimes the lorries are full of woods, I burnt all the woods.
Ai : Do you scold them?
No no, I didn't scold them.
F : How long have you lived here?
- I have been living here for about 20 years.
Ana: What is over there? Is it a new construction?
-That is the developer construction worker's hut.
Ai: Oh, it's the temporary hut for the construction workers.
F: Usually in a week, how many times that the dumpers sent their trashes?
On your estimation.
- Not necessarily. If there are trashes, then they will come here.
F: Is it uncertain?
- Uncertain. If there are trashes, then they come here to dump.
Sometimes, two or three days they don't have trashes then they will not come.
But if there is, sometimes they dump for about 4 to 5 lorries.
Ai: Wow!
- At most sometimes 4 to 5 lorries dump here in a day.
F: Means that there are no trash trucks that collect your trash to elsewhere?
- No. They just dump it here.
F: Does the villagers also dumping here?
- Yes, but if my trash are not much, I just throw them over there and burn it.
F: How about the other villagers?
- They also burn their own waste themselves.
F: Means that there are no people that pick it up?
- No no.
Ana: For the lorries that dumped here,
are their waste are from construction waste but not garbage?
- Yes. From the constructions.
Ai: So there are stones, roof tiles.
Yes, stones, sand, sometimes the demolished house waste were also dumped here.
And I burn them which can.
F: Because if it is own garbage, the villagers settle it themselves.
- If it is own garbage, they don't dump there.
Ana: So there are no foul here? - No no. Since it is dry trash.
But there are houses that the government paid workers to clean them but not here.
Ai: Is it the front houses?
- No, the one housing estates area.
There are workers that are paid to clean them.
But there are none here.
F: How about your toilet sewerage?
- I made a drain and a pond, from then I put PVC pipe and
discharged them to the larger drain.
F: Oh you made it yourself? - Yes I did. You're good.
Ana: Is it same with the rest of the houses?
- Yes they are.
Ai: The PVC pipe you install it yourself?
Yes. There the PVC that I not yet installed, the red one.
Ana: Oh, this one.
F: From then it is discharged to the drain?
- Yes, into the drain
The drain is like a small creek, which flow into the river.
F: Oh in the end from drain it will flow into the river?
- Yes it will. Now the water is on high tide.
Ana: Where does the garbage from?
F: Yesterday it seems clean but why today it seems not?
That is from the housing estates from that side.
Sometimes they gone bad and just throw their rubbish into the river.
So when high tide, the rubbish eventually will flow here,
but when its low tide, the rubbish will flow back to that side.
But I do angry with them. Rather than thrown, it should be burnt down.
But those people are lazy and just throw their rubbish into the river.
Ai: Oh they just throw them into the river?
- Yes they did. So now the river is polluted. Those are because of the lazy people.
If it were up to me, I just burn them away.
F: Thank you for willing to answer all of our questions.
- You all came here with what?
F: With a car.
- Parking over there?
TC: Yes.
- Study at UTM?
TC : Yes, UTM.
S: Was there anyone from UTM that comes over here to do some research?
- Yes there was, an older man that comes here.
S: Oh. Probably lecturers.
TC: Thank you uncle.
We also manage to interview few other villagers in Kampung Laut
to acquire information on the effects of pollution that comes from Skudai Parade.
Aa: Where does this flow comes from?
- The water is from the above area, flow here from this Skudai Parade.
Sometimes they even discharge sludge here.
Aa: Is there any foul?
The smells are so stinks. Even you yourself could smell it now.
Sometimes even worse than this.
In a day, dozens times they discharge sludge into this drain.
Aa: Is there anyone comes to settle this problem?
No no, they just comes, taking picture and then gone. That's all.
Even this drain is nearly broken.
- If there is rain, the water will later overflow to this side and enter his house.
Aa: If it is raining for days, it sure is?
- Yes it is. My house is suffered for this foul.
Aa: Have you ever reported to anyone who responsible on this matter?
I done it already but those people are like ignoring this problem.
I even reported on this pit, but still there are no actions have been taken.
