Well, if you live along the coastline in the U.S. where hurricanes happen, there are things
you need to do to protect the outside of your house. I'll talk to you about three different
things here today. The gutters, I'm going to talk about garage doors and then first
I want to talk to you about covering the window. It's very important that you protect your
windows against flying debris. In the case of my house, I have these steel panels that
were provided by the builder that are fairly easy to put on and you just put them on right
before a storm. It takes less than two hours. Alright, most people have a house that has
gutters on it. Gutters help take water away from the house, but they require some maintenance,
especially when it comes to being prepared for a hurricane. So you want to make sure,
at the start of hurricane season, that your gutters are in good mechanical shape and even
more importantly, they are cleaned out. They build up with debris and leaves, so have them
cleaned out. You either do it yourself or have someone come out and clean them up and
make sure they are in good working order before the season. And while we're out here, if you
notice, I have a lot of nice landscaping out here and I have stands for plants, all of
that has to come inside when a hurricane is ready to threat. That's on my checklist to
do, before the hurricane gets here, get all of these loose object inside so they don't
become part of the problem. You know, I'm very fortunate in that my house was built
with a reinforce garage. You can see this heavy steel panels that goes across it and
reinforces it and help prevent it from blowing in when the wind blows hard. You can go on
line if you don't have a garage door like this and find out ways to reinforce it after
the fact. Now we have shown you three ways, three of the things you can do to help protect
your house for a hurricane. It's hurricane resistant, not hurricane proof. That's why
we all have to have insurance, from your home owners' policy and flood insurance. Also if
you're a renter, renters insurance is highly recommended because you need protection for
your property.
