My name is Frank, and we’re the River Keepers.
We come out here every once in a while and just… clean up the river.
I think I’m the kind of guy that a financial advisor really loves because I was doing it right.
I was saving early, watching my investments, but at the same time, I’m the kind of guy that they worry about because I didn’t listen to mine.
There were times where I wouldn’t even consult him at all.
He saw some red flags that I didn’t, and he wanted me to take fewer risks and go into protection mode.
As far as I was concerned, I saw opportunity.
I thought I was doing the right thing. [laughs] Obviously not.
Well, my wife and I fortunate because I make enough money for both of us.
She wanted to stay home and raise the kids, and we realized that she could do it.
The reason to get behind all of this to plan was simple: it’s my family.
Oh, I’ve definitely been discouraged before.
The severity of the economic downturn really threw me.
I did not expect that at all.
I guess not very many people did.
I mean, I lost some, but… at least I got a head start.
That was a really tough time… which is why I come here.
I guess I don’t like it, but yeah, I am a little bit closer to retirement time, and I needed to be a little more conservative and protect what I had.
[chuckles] I guess it’s time to switch things around.
I tell you, the river is kind of like my family.
It’s got a lot of special meaning.
Something as beautiful as this, you just, you don’t want to not take care of it.
Yes, I’m listening.
I’m all ears.
[chuckles] I’m definitely going to let my financial advisor do his job.
I just can’t keep investing like I have all the time in the world because I’m not 18 anymore.
I meet with my VALIC advisor once a year.
We go over my investment mix and make sure that the risks we’re taking are not too high.
It shouldn’t be too hard.
I save, I’m disciplined, it’s just a matter of staying of staying on course.
And it’s worth it if everyone is taken care of.
