At a flea market, all you need is an open mind,
a good eye, and cash doesn't hurt.
On this episode of "Flea Market Flip,"
two savvy design teams go head-to-head...
Yeah, you're tough.
I hope your skills are as good as ours,
because whoo-whee.
...hunting and haggling
for diamonds in the rough.
I'd probably do like $150 on it.
Would you do $125 and we'll take it right now?
Then they'll transform those overlooked treasures
into chic, one-of-a-kind pieces.
And finally, they'll have to flip their items for a profit.
How about $150?
Whichever team outsells their competition
goes home with $5,000.
It's the end of the day.
Make us an offer. What do you think?
Guys, time is now up.

Hi, I'm Lara Spencer. Welcome to "Flea Market Flip."
Our two teams give new meaning to "family affair,"
as they begin their hunt
here at the Rose Bowl Flea Market in Pasadena, California.
First up, we have brother-in-laws Marc and Henry,
whose taste lean towards a man-cave vibe.
We're not scared to roll up our sleeves and get dirty.
They're going up
against flipping sisters Amanda and Whitney,
who have a take-no-prisoners attitude at flea markets...
We're searching and we're searching.
...and say their secret weapon is a good eye.
We know what sells. We know what people like.
To get started, we're giving each team
a list of projects we call our flip list,
along with a budget of $500
and only one hour to shop for their three projects.
Get here early, you get all the good finds.
Our teams must complete three projects on our flip list.
First up, it's our "Good Bones" project.
We want our teams to find a classic, well-made piece
they can bring back to life.
Okay. "Good Bones."
All right.
Next up, it's our "Elements of Glass" project.
The teams need to create a piece featuring glass in their design.
Our third project, "Industrial Design."
Transform an industrial item into stylish decor.
Marc and Henry, have you met Amanda and Whitney?
Yes. Unfortunately, we have.
Oh, unfortunately!
All right, break it up.
We have intimidated them. [ Laughs ]
Yeah, 'cause we're tough.
You still got time to back out.
All right, the trash-talking needs to stay to a minimum.
Right now, we're focused on buying low,
finding great pieces out there.
You have your $500?
It's all in there.
The Rose Bowl is packed with vendors
that have tons of diamonds in the rough
waiting to be transformed, so go find 'em!
[ Cheering ]
I know.
Just keep your eyes open.
There's a lot of good stuff out there.
How do you guys like to strategize negotiating?
Well, we're absolutely adorable.
If they're guys, oh, my gosh, we just --
They're dead. They give it to you.
They're putty in our hands, okay?
So, you just watch.
I'm gonna watch and learn.
Okay.
Look.
AMANDA: That is incredible.
Oh, that is so awesome!
I think the lines are beautiful.
It's very ornate.
And we could put a mirror on there and do the silver leafing.
Where did you get this piece?
It's an Indonesian origin.
It's got some age.
Very cool. How much is this?
$175 for that.
Is that the best you can do?
I think he could do a little better than that.
We could probably do a little better.
Thank you, Mr. Hoodie.
Okay, $150.
We have $125 right here.
Cash. Money.
$125, guys.
$125? Just let it go.
All right! Yay!
Whoo! I love that.
WHITNEY: What we're gonna create with it
will be an absolute piece of art.
We got to find something that we can refinish, though --
something with some good bones to it.
Something like this. See?
There we go.
This could be our "Good Bones," 'cause it's solid.
Yeah, it's solid.
We can throw a burner inside
and have a little freaking fire pit.
Yeah.
How much you willing to work with us on this price?
WOMAN: I could do $100.
Can you do $80?
Yeah.
Cash. Right now.
Uh...
$90 would be my best.
Okay.
You got yourself a deal.
Thank you so much.
For the "Elements of Glass,"
what we are going to search for is a table
with glass on the top.
This is incredible.
This is perfect.
AMANDA: We can take the top off.
Break it up.
Uh-huh.
That would bring this to life.
Cool.
MAN: Yes?
How much is this table?
I was asking $200 for it.
Is that the best you can do?
I'd probably do like $150 on it.
Would you do $125 and we'll take it right now?
How about $140?
$130.
Nice!
Thank you. Thank you guys so much.
WHITNEY: This is gonna be perfect.
AMANDA: It's gonna be incredible.
Looking for the "Elements of Glass."
Look for a table or something
that we can put a pattern on top of it.
Oh, here we go. There's some nice tables.
HENRY: I like it 'cause it has a little drawer.
This little lip right here, this edge,
gives us enough room to set our glass tile in.
$225 for the pair.
What are you willing to do on these?
You do $180?
It's broken right there. It's missing a little piece.
How about $190?
$185?
All right. Looks good.
We can definitely paint them a different color.
HENRY: Give it a feminine touch.
Got to support the ladies.
Feminine touch coming from the man-cave team.
[ Both laugh ]
What we're gonna do with the "Industrial"
is make either a chandelier or a lamp
or something like that.
Oh, Amanda, that's cool.
What do you think?
We can use this for -- for the chandelier idea.
AMANDA: How much?
$75?
Is that your best?
Oh, it's never the best.
We like that.
We could probably do...
$60.
We love it.
Thank you.
AMANDA: We're gonna add a few more elements to it --
some shades and maybe a piece of chunky wood.
AMANDA: Could those be the shades?
These would be awesome to hang them
I like it.
I think so. I think we should get them.
Hi. How are you?
We're interested in these really cool metal shades.
What's the price that you have on them?
I'm asking $10 apiece.
What's the best price for six of them?
Give me $35.
$35?
Okay, we'll do it. We'll do it.
The lamp shades that we came across really were amazing,
and they will complement the pulley that we already found.
We're really running out of time.
I know.
Industrial, industrial.
We need something cool.
We need something that's gonna stand out.
Check it out. This is freaking cool.
That's definitely industrial.
Yeah. Water feature?
Make a fountain out of it.
Small water pump.
Put a couple of faucets in here
and have the water shooting out of it.
I wonder how much it is.
You'd see them on the outsides of the châteaus and villas
all throughout Europe, actually, and it's $45.
45 bucks?
Take 20 bucks for it?
I'll tell you what.
I'll meet you halfway and I'll do $30.
I think that's good, dude. 30 bucks?
Let's do it.
It's yours.
I think we can definitely find a buyer for that.
What do you think of your competition?
They're very crafty.
How would you describe your style versus theirs?
We're putting a manly touch to it
but definitely something
that a woman might be interested in buying, as well.
Oh, I love that.
You're in touch with your feminine side.
Let me tell you, we totally got this.
We are gonna rock it out.
They think they got this.
Well, they got another think coming.
Welcome back to "Flea Market Flip."
Transforming three projects in just one day
is really ambitious,
and our teams are working hard.
Time to roll up my sleeves.
Marc and Henry are putting some muscle into sprucing up
a pair of antique side tables.
They plan to transform a shabby-looking cooking table
known as a brazier into a working fire pit.
And they want to convert a European washbasin
into a quirky water feature.
Amanda and Whitney have their hands full, as well.
They'll be merging a mirror with an Indonesian window frame.
They want to combine this industrial pulley
and vintage lamp shades
into one chic lighting fixture.
And they plan to undertake a massive reinvention
of a glass-top table.
With just one day to get three projects done,
it is a good thing our master craftsmen are here to help.
Let's just stand it up right behind you.
Okay.
AMANDA: To create the glass element,
which is our metal table,
we're gonna take the glass...
Let's put this on top of it.
...and we're gonna break it up into pieces.
[ Glass shatters ]
Holy smokes! It did it at once!
We're gonna create some forms...
They look great.
...to pour the broken glass and the concrete into the forms.
So, talk to me about this project.
What is this particular --
Well, what we're trying to do
is we're trying to get all the air bubbles.
Mm-hmm.
And we're trying to get all the water to come to the top,
kind of like when you squeeze out a sponge
and you're getting all the water out, and then it dries faster.
Yes.
All right.
Good luck.
HENRY: For our "Elements of Glass,"
we found these nightstands.
MARC: Pre-1930.
Dude, I think you better put some gloves on.
Real men don't wear gloves.
We're gonna put a mosaic glass piece inside the top of it.
That's gonna be our glass feature.
I mean, these could be side tables for a couch.
These could be nightstands.
Now, you guys spent a lot of money on this.
We got them for $185, so...
So, if we can get at least $400 for the pair,
I think we'll be happy.
There's a buyer for it, they'll take them,
'cause Henry here knows how to sell it.
All right.
That's it.
Sweet.
Let that sit for a minute, and then we're ready for grout.
Work it in there. There you go.
That looks great.
[ Laughs ]
Hey, don't dig it too much.
[ Laughs ]
WHITNEY: It's like baking a cake.
This is gonna take a long time to set.
It's actually already set.
It's just the end of the moisture is --
Yes, thank you.
I'd hate to see it crack.
Well, you know what? Come sale day,
we are gonna shock the heck out of all of you.
It's gonna be heavy, so, I don't know.
It's gonna be interesting.
Yeah, we'll see what happens.
For our "Good Bones" project,
we picked up a vintage table
that's actually turned out to be a Dutch brazier.
What we're gonna do is convert it into a propane fire pit.
So, look at this one we found.
These were originally used to braise meat.
This is obviously a very old antique.
It sold for $1,300.
Don't get any crazy ideas in your mind, okay?
This is a more modern reproduction of what this is.
I had no idea that there were these pieces created
Right.
I learn something new every day.
Yep.
Yeah, this is really, really awesome bones.
AMANDA: We found this amazing Indonesian window frame.
We're gonna create a mirror out of it.
Nice.
Okay. Fabulous.
We're gonna bring the wood back to life
with some beeswax to get some moisture back in the wood.
This is gonna be weighing a lot.
Well, we want to put a French cleat on here.
French cleat -- This mounts to your wall.
My hand is the wall of the house.
And this literally slides right into place like that.
It's the strongest, best mount
for a big, heavy piece like this.
It's a great piece.
I think it's gonna do well.
The reason I like it is because I look good in it.
HENRY: [ Laughs ]
With the "Industrial Design,"
we have a pulley and we have several shades,
and we're gonna create a hanging light fixture.
So, we're gonna flip it over,
and we're gonna suspend it from this.
WHITNEY: Yeah.
That's the moment of truth.
What do we think?
Plug it in. Let's try it out.
AMANDA: I can't wait to see who that's gonna go home with.
HENRY: Our "Industrial Design,"
we picked a piece
that's turned out to be a European washbasin.
We're gonna convert that into an actual working fountain.
We're gonna put the two faucets here.
ALEX: Oh, great.
We're gonna put a funnel here.
Put some rock in here.
Ta-da!
HENRY: That looks pretty cool.
Too bad there wasn't beer coming out of it.
No. Oh, dude.
Do we have time?
I think it looks manly.
That's our manly project.
That's it, man.
I'm a little worried right now.
AMANDA: [ Laughing ] I know, David.
I'm a little worried.
It's -- It's been cold in here throughout the day.
The riskiest part of this project
is taking the forms apart.
They could chip the concrete or they could crack it,
so it just absolutely has to be done very tenderly.
AMANDA: Oh, my gosh.
Okay, ready?
[ Gasps ]
That is beautiful!
People questioned was it gonna dry in time,
and look --
we created a masterpiece.
My hands are really dirty.
That's all right. It's a European washbasin.
So, look. If I can just --
Can I get a manicure and pedicure over here?
SPENCER: Our teams are getting ready to sell
here at Hollywood's hippest flea market,
the Melrose Trading Post.
Let's keep them as a set.
Yeah, let's put them right here.
Their refurbished pieces are looking good.
I love it. It's so gorgeous.
But will savvy buyers here want to spend a pretty penny on them?
We feel really confident
that our pieces are gonna sell, sell, sell.
MARC: Yes, yes.
We need some gas money to get home, so we have to win.
[ Laughter ]
How are you gonna describe and explain
this wonderful, massive table?
So excited about that table.
You can't keep it. I know you want to.
I know!
But you're not allowed to keep it.
It almost looks like a face --
those are the eyes, here's the nose,
and then he has, like, a smile.
He's like a happy guy...
who's drooling.
So, is this to demonstrate what the possibilities are?
HENRY: Yes, 'cause we're not able to have open flame here
at the flea markets.
No. Let's not burn down the flea market.
You guys have put so much work
into finding, fixing, and now the moment of truth.
Let's go flip.
All right!
Let's do it.
We'll be here all day.
Be sure to come on back, check out our items we have here.
Fire pit, nightstands.
We got a water fountain, guys.
Come on down. Check it out.
Are you at a carnival?
Oh, man. That's how we do.
Could you turn it on and off?
You actually can, yeah.
Really?
Oh, man. You guys got down on this.
How much is that?
$575.
It's an 1800s Dutch meat brazier.
Average fire pits go from anywhere from 150 to 300 bucks.
I was thinking about offering like 100 bucks for it.
[ Sighs ] Um...
How about $150?
Let me think about that.
Okay.
We'll be here.
How about the fire pit?
We had an offer.
What was the offer?
100 bucks.
Ooh.
That's not gonna do it. No.
WOMAN: That is beautiful. I absolutely love it.
I should take a picture to send to my husband.
Do you mind?
AMANDA: No, absolutely.
Well, we hope you come back.
Have fun, okay?
HENRY: How you guys doing?
Don't be shy.
This is actually a working fire pit.
WOMAN 2: That's awesome.
It runs off the small propane tanks.
So...
It's nice.
How about $150?
Sold.
Whoo!
All right. Give me five. Give me five.
Competition is on.
Any bites on the chandelier?
Yes, a lady came in, and she took a photo of it.
WHITNEY: Had to get hubby's approval.
I know!
Just pull the trigger.
We have to put the fear that if you walk away,
it could be gone,
which is so true at flea markets, you know?
Yep.
We got a cool-looking water fountain over there,
couple of nightstands, so...
go check it out.
WOMAN: How much are you asking for them?
$575 or best offer.
All right, we'll be back. Thank you.
Sounds good. Thanks, guys.
All right, thanks.
What does that -- What's the price on that?
AMANDA: We're asking $325 for it,
but we're ready to make some deal.
What would you offer?
Can you do $225?
Deal.
Yes. [ Laughs ]
They sold it.
It looked kind of cool.
It's a good light.
Whoever got it is very -- very lucky.
Thank you so much.
You're welcome.
Don't drop the wine glasses.
We were asking 500 bucks for this,
but we're taking offers.
YOUNG WOMAN: These are nice.
Yeah.
For the set, we can probably do $300.
$150 and a hug?
[ Laughs ]
Can you do $250?
Can we do $200?
Can you do $225?
$200. I don't have a job.
Let's do $200.
I'm a student.
$200?
$200.
So much.
Hugs!
Would you like another hug? It's free.
[ Laughs ]
You get no change with that.
Thank you so much.
MARC: Something is better than nothing.
Sold.
That's two down.
That's two down. What the heck are we gonna do?
SPENCER: Some of my flea-market finds and projects
are online now at...
Our teams are hustling,
trying hard to sell their fixed-up finds
here at the Melrose Trading Post.
Hey, come check out this water fountain right here.
It is not an easy sell,
but it's Marc and Henry's last item,
while sisters Amanda and Whitney have two to go.
We designed that specially for you.
[ Laughs ]
Using every trick in the book,
the pressure is on.
My heart is beating and racing right at the moment.
What can we do to get this more attention?
Should we rejigger a little bit?
Yeah, let's do it.
Here.
There you go.
Yeah, look at that.
I mean, that's an eye-catcher.
10 minutes to go. How are we doing?
10 minutes to go.
We got two of the three sold,
and we're working on the last one.
What's the last one?
The water fountain.
You need to find that special customer.
We have a water feature up there.
He's a plumber, so he appreciates that.
Is that cool or what?
I was gonna tell you that it was leaking.
[ Laughs ]
We added this gorgeous mirror.
It looks like a door or something, right?
Yeah. Right.
WOMAN: She just moved into a new apartment.
[ Gasps ] Oh, my god!
It's perfect!
It's kind of, like, shabby chic.
Oh, my gosh.
Well, you make -- You make me an offer right now.
It's the end of the day,
so please just make us an offer.
What do you think?
Can we do -- I don't know -- $500?
We will take it!
What? Oh, my god!
[ Laughter ]
It is a deal.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Guys, time is now up.
Come on over.
What's sold is sold.
What is not sold stays.
You did good!
You each have one item left.
So, let's talk about it.
We have no idea what they spent, but we feel --
It could go either way.
That's right.
Let's break it down.
Both of you made some interesting choices.
You guys bought a pair of tables.
You paid what for the tables?
HENRY: The end tables, we paid $185 for them.
And tell them what you sold them for.
We sold them for $200.
We made a profit of 20 bucks.
I think $15, actually.
Sorry to correct you, but it was $15.
Ladies, tell the boys what you spent on the frame
that would later become that beautiful mirror.
$125.
And you sold it for?
$500.
And with that one item,
they won this flea-market flip.
Whoo!
Even though we lost, it was a great experience.
I definitely encourage people to get their creative side out
and come out of here and try it.
With our winnings, of course,
we are gonna go to flea markets, thrift stores,
and yard sales.
Congratulations.
Congratulations. Good job.
Give it a hug!
Thank you, guys. It was fun.
