bjbj Creating a College Essay in Microsoft Word Hello everyone and thank you for joining
me for a quick introduction into a popular word processing program, Microsoft Word. Today
I will share a few basics for formatting a college essay in Microsoft Word. I will be
using common MLA formatting and basics often requested by professors. First, open Microsoft
Word. It will automatically open to a fresh new page. With your new page open, set your
margins to 1 . Click the Page Layout tab and select Margins. From the dropdown menu select
Normal. You will see that it has all four sides of the paper set to a 1 margin. Once
your margins are set, lets set up your font choice and point size. On the Home tab go
to the drop down menu of font selections. Times New Roman in a standard font used in
college essays because of its clean and professional appearance. Professors also commonly request
it. Now that your have your font selected, you should adjust your point size of the font
to 12. Simply pull down the drop down menu and select the 12. Before we begin typing
we need to make sure the page is also set up to be double-spaced. Click the arrow in
the bottom right hand corner of the Paragraph section. Under Spacing, select Double and
click OK. MLA also suggests that your last name and page number be located at the top
right hand corner of each page. To do this, click the Insert tab, and then select page
number, select top of page, and finally Plain Number 3. You will now see the page number
at the top of the page. All you have to do now is type your name right in front of it
and you are done. Be sure to close the Header and Footer. Now lets get typing! MLA formatting
suggests a heading on your paper with the following information. Name Instructor name
Course Name and Date Now that the heading is done it is time to type your title. Press enter one time and
type the title of your paper. Your title should be centered on the page so select the title
you just typed in and go back to the home tab and click the button for center spacing
in the paragraph section. Click enter one time and now set the body back to left hand
spaced. Press the tab button one time and begin typing. Congratulations! Your paper
is all set up and you are ready to start typing your whole paper. I hope this brief introduction
into typing an essay was helpful to you. Be sure to check out all the features in the
