Sydney-bound, having just passed Woy Woy and emerging from a tunnel 30 seconds ago...
we are at the start of what looks like a fiord but is connected to the river.
Technically not a fiord because there were never any glaciers here.
Next you will see a house on squatted land...
ie they pay no rent.
http://eng.anarchopedia.org/squatting
Another squatter.
Boats often more for days, also for free
More houses on squatted land
accessible only by boat.
If you don't blink you will see a blur of...
Wondabyne Train station...
only one carriage long, the train stops here only on request.
It is the start of "The Great North Walk".
Same houses closer up.
They pay nothing for this land...
Good luck I say...
because their grandparents appreciated nature...
unlike most residents at nearby Lake Macquarie who build trophy homes...
and destroy the nature they supposedly came for.
Train from Sydney.
Sticks in the water are for oyster farming.
Consider clicking "watch in high quality"...
which should be just below the video and on the right.
You can see there are no roads...
Since we are surrounded by steep hills and cliffs.
One tunnel before this video is the township of Woy Woy.
Which is similar but flatter and heavily populated
Spike Milligan (comedian of "Goons" fame) grew up there.
He scripted a tourism advertisement, that simply went:
"Water here...
Water there...
Water, water everywhere...
Woy Woy!"
Orange sandstone cliffs can be seen through the trees.
The white houses in the distance
accessible only by ferry.
The island is home to the Bradley Bushland Reserve...
comprising 1 acre of coastal ridge-top heath and a garden of wildflowers...
It supports a rare plant community of some 140 species...
and is the habitat for an increasing number of bird & animal species.
Lots of impressive tunnels on this Newcastle line.
Look closely for bats with glow-in-the-dark eyes...
Just kidding!
We emerge onto a steel bridge.
Sandstone pilons of the old bridge remain...
like watery tombstones of masons long gone.
Dangar Island closer up
"Hawkesbury River" township & train station is about 30 seconds beyond the end of this video.
